secondary and elementary education..confused!

I am currently an English major with a year to a year and a half to go before getting my Bachelors. I want to eventually get my Masters in English and teach as a college instructor. However, I need to work for a while first and I am concerned about finding work with a Bachelors in English. I love working with kids and have considered switching to secondary education (English) or possibly elementary education. At this point, secondary ed. would take me at least 2.5 yrs to complete for a Bachelors and elem. ed. would take about 3 yrs to get my Bachelors. I am lost and not sure what to do. The alternate route that my school offers takes 2 yrs to get a teaching certificate. At that point, wouldn't I just be better off getting my Masters in education or of course, in english? If you do not have a Bachelors in education, how does getting your Masters in education work? Is it a lot of extra work?

Also, for any teachers out there..can you give me "the good, the bad, and the ugly" for high school and elementary teachers? Im not concerned about finding a teaching position but am wanting to know what the "day in the life" is like?

My daughters undergrad degree is in biology, she is getting a graduate degree in education.( in her 2nd year of a two yr program)
I think in many areas, especially if you will be teaching high/middle school, it is preferred to have the degree in the subject you are teaching- say English, and then get what you need to be a certificated teacher.

Not sure if this is state specific…
In New Jersey, secondary school ed majors earn a degree in their academic subject and also complete education requirements for their bachelors. Son has an undergrad degree in music education, masters in music performance and is currently teaching in the elementary and middle school public school levels.
