securing loans/working with funds

getting in was the hard part...now comes the really hard part.

anyone (parents, representatives, well-learned Sternies) know alot about student loans? ive got roughly 13K to cover, and i wanna get the max subsidized i can. any input is always appreciated.

i am expecting some third-party scholarships and grants (through school and my job). If i get any more free money, and i bring the info to the FinAid office, what happens? do they subtract from my loans? will i have to transfer funds?

final question: can i deferr any of my loan/scholarship/grant money to housing or commuting costs? i would not house on campus, i mean if i was able to secure a (cheap!) apartment. could i use my loans or my scholarships or grants to pay for this, or whatever the cost of my commute would be?

thanks a bunch

I'm in the same position as you.
I applied for the Sallie Mae loan, but you'll need a cosigner.

where do you work that they are willing to pay for some of your schooling?

i work at a country club in Jersey...ever see caddy shack? lol, thats almost exactly what its like. i think i can get the max they offer (most of my coworkers are rich, not so bright NJ kids) which would be about 6k/a year, which would obviously rock.

keepin fingers crossed!

wowww thats amazing! good luck w/ that!

bump...i need info from real people (brochures and FAQs aint cuttin it for me) and this message board is so damn busy (anyone else notice that?)

Try www.myrichuncle.com I don't think you need a cosigner there, and you get your interest reduced for getting high grades. If I end up taking out loans, it will likely be from there.

And im pretty sure you can use scholarship money from housing, even if its off campus. I think I heard that it goes to NYU and they issue you a check or something. But don't quote me on that, I'd go ahead and ask NYU. (I don't think you can for commuting costs though, but, again, I could be wrong)

a friend of mine just got a near-full ride to her college after she appealed. as she said it, she was going to take out a student loan, and with that money, travel during her summer as a way to relax (she'll be entering a 6-year or so premed program, very tough, etc.) This wasnt said in jest, she was considering it very very closely.

So im starting to assume that, with the proper student loan, you can do just about anything. I mean its your $$, right?
