Seeking advice on whether to transfer or not!?

Hello everyone,

This is my first post. I'm a current sophmore business student at Virginia Tech (studying Business Information Technology, which is the most selective major in the biz dept by a little bit), US News ranked our undergrad business program #37 in the country. I spent my freshman year at George Mason University, and during my freshman year I earned a 3.4 GPA and transferred to a more prestigious, more selective college (VT). GMU's undergrad business program isn't bad, #98 in the country. But overall, there is definitely more selectivity with Virginia Tech. GMU's average GPA for high schoolers is around 3.3/3.4, and combined SAT's 25/75 percentile range is 1000-1210. For Virginia Tech, average GPA is 3.7 and average SAT's are 1110-1290.

Now, I'm considering transferring back to GMU again. Why? Because GMU is right in the Washington DC Metro area, with tons of intern opportunities. Virginia Tech is right in the middle of nowhere. Only job you can get is at Wal-Mart. Do you guys think a more prestigious college on your resume is more important than a bunch of internships/job experience? Of course I'd be getting internships during the summer if I stay at tech, but with GMU I can do part time internships during the school year. I really want to do all I can to look best to employers for my first job so I can start off making some nice $$.

Goods About GMU:
- Closer to Wash. DC Metro area for internships all throught the year.
- Will be able to muster up a better GPA I'm sure.

Goods About Tech:
- More prestigious university, harder to get into than GMU.
- Classes are a tad bit harder than Mason, so I might not get as good of a GPA.
- The major I'm in is good money (Business IT/MIS); survey done by school says avg. salary $49k right after graduation.

What does everyone think about this?

Thanks guys.
Dan

Which school do you enjoy more?

I recently took over the hiring process at my agency, and we are giving a lot of weight to internships in our hiring. Your not talking about Ivy League schools either way (not a slam); so, an internship with a high profile company that is likely to land you a better entry position and/or top shelf recommendation would probably serve you better than graduating from an institution with slightly more prestige.

Again, which school do you like better, aside from internship opportunities during the school year?

If the answer is VTech, then, I'd suggest staying put. If you're trying to transfer back because of better employment opportunities after getting a 4-year degree, it won't matter much. Just remember that in real wages, a 4-year degree is losing ground...much like the HS degree has over time.

So, it comes down, I think, to liking the place you go to school, which may impact your gpa positively, even if it might be a tad harder at Vtech. Gotta weight the marginal cost to the marginal benefit.

Stay at Tech...more famous school. You don't want to transfer TOO often. You can always go to grad school in the DC area, or just get a job there.
