Selection Process

I applied early decision and am really anxious for next week! I was wondering how WM admissions office selects students. Am I competing against all the other people that applied early or just the people from my school? Is there a certain amount of people that WM is required to accept from each high school?

Hey, aknahal. I’ve also applied ED to W&M. I’ve been starting to feel anxious myself. Best of luck to you. Anyway, while I don’t know for sure, I’m pretty sure you and I are competing against all of the other people that applied ED. And no, I don’t think W&M is required to accept a certain number of students from each high school. High schools are so diverse–one school may have 1000 graduating students, while another may only have 50.

yea… you are competing against everyone who applied ED, not just the people from your school. Some schools will only have 1 person applying to W&M. Some schools will have 50+. Some high schools will have no one accepted, and some will have 15-25.

good luck!

That’s a good question and one that has an answer with many sides. Sorry for the delay in responding. We were closed for Thanksgiving break.

First and foremost, you are competing against the greater ED pool. However, we do evaluate each student in the context of his/her school which means that we compare your program of study, grades, extracurricular opportunities, etc to those of other students who attend you high school who have similar academic and extracurricular opportunities.

We do not have any quotas for any high schools. If 10 students apply from one high school and all 10 are super competitive, we’ll admit all 10. If 10 students apply and none are particularly competitive, we won’t admit any. Or, it may be that 10 apply from one school and some are super competitive and those are the ones we admit. The only “quota” we adhere to is 65% of our student body must be VA residents.

So whether or not others applied from your high school has no impact on your chances for admission but we do compare you in context to other students from your high school and compare you to the greater pool. Hope this makes sense and clarifies our process.
