Selective Service Draft for Financial Aid?!!?

First off, I am 95% sure I can't get any financial aid anyway so is it worth it to sign myself away to the selective service draft should congress deem it necessary just to take a chance at getting some money?

Well, if you're a male US citizen, you kinda have to sign up for Selective Service. :)

You do? I thought that you only have to if you're applying for financial aid.

Yes. All male US citizens have to register within 30 days of their birthday (although I have known a few people to register after this). Otherwise, you could get in trouble with the law, which is something to avoid. :p

You gotta register for selective service. Check 'yes' on FAFSA or it will hold up your app.

There is no draft. There won't be a draft in the forseeable future. Volunteer armed services are working fine without a draft.

i have a question about this also... first time i filled out the FAFSA...i put "no" for this question....but i made a correction on the SAR and changed it to "yes".... i was wondering if they will send anything in the mail... i just want to know if i official registered so that i dont get "in trouble with the law" or w/e

Man up nancy. You have to register for the draft anyways. And like sblake7 said, there won't be a draft because of the Iraq mistake. It's going to take an additional conflict for a draft to be needed, and the US probably won't instigate something like that. North Korea could become a problem at any time, China won't be an issue until 2009 or so.

Why would China become a problem in 2009?

You have to register for Selective Service regardless of what your college or career plans are. However, your chances of actullay getting drafted are pretty slim.

ya they will send a proof of registration in the mail, i got mine recentley and they registered me even tho i'm not 18 yet. hopefully there wont be a draft in my lifetyme,

I would NOT register, especially if you can't get aid anyway. Do not trust Bush - he WILL bring the draft back if he wants to.

And to the people saying it's required, so what? Just because you have to do it, doesn't mean you should. What happened to rebellion?

Pres Bush has said repeatedly that we do not need, and he will not support, a draft. The DOD has repeatedly said that it prefers the all volunteer services, and that we do not need a draft.

The only people that have called for a draft in recent years are congressional democrats-- under the reasoning that a draft is somehow more 'fair' than an all volunteer military.

Check 'yes' on FAFSA and move on.

It's stupid and irresponsible to suggest people not register. It's required and there are penalties. Why would you take that chance?

"What is the penalty for not registering?

If you do not register, you could be prosecuted and fined up to $250,000 and/or be put in jail for up to five years. Registration is also a requirement to qualify for Federal student aid, job training benefits, and most Federal employment."

Benefits linked to registration: <a href="http://www.sss.gov/FSbenefits.htm%5B/url%5D">http://www.sss.gov/FSbenefits.htm</a></p>

"Pres Bush has said repeatedly that we do not need, and he will not support, a draft. The DOD has repeatedly said that it prefers the all volunteer services, and that we do not need a draft."

Bush has lied before. If you want, I can provide examples.

Also, we don't need fear-mongering. You won't get in trouble:

"In 1980, a person required to register who did not could face up to five years in jail or a fine up to $250,000. Despite these penalties, government records indicate that from 1980 through 1990, there were only 20 indictments [1], of which 19 were instigated in part by self publicized and self reported non-registration. The last prosecution took place in January of 1986, after which many believed the government declined to continue prosecutions when it became apparent that the trials were themselves causing a decline in registration."

I hate Bush just as much as the next guy (I've worked for a local US Congressman, volunteered for the Dems in the 2004 election), and I am certain that there will be no draft as a result of what is going on in Iraq. Like I said in a previous post, it is going to take another large conflict for a draft to be needed. The only places where this could realistically happen are Iran and North Korea. There's also the potential for China to start something over Taiwan, but I don't see that until after Beijing 2008. Plus, they are having enough success with ruining the US through their economic wing, Wal-Mart.

If you don't register, you are putting yourself at risk of a felony conviction and jail time. And if a draft does come up, you'll be found out anyways. I don't want to fight in a war either, but I know my responsibilities. You hide behind Bush while millions of others do what is required to get financial aid, employment, etc. Pathetic.

"If you don't register, you are putting yourself at risk of a felony conviction and jail time."
********; it's not true, stop posting this crap. (<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Selective_Service%5B/url%5D):">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Selective_Service):</a> "The last prosecution took place in January of 1986, after which many believed the government declined to continue prosecutions when it became apparent that the trials were themselves causing a decline in registration."

"Like I said in a previous post, it is going to take another large conflict for a draft to be needed. "

True, and Bush wants to invade Iran, maybe Syria. Just like you said.

I'm 17 and going to college in the fall. I won't be 18 until the fall, so should I click yes on the fafsa correction for this? It says ages 18-25, so I dunno if it makes sense for me to say yes.

For the thousandth time-- check yes. Whether 17, or 18-- just check yes and move on. Checking no will hang up your application-- and you'll have to go in later and change it to yes.

Bush is too unpopular to start a conflict with Iran the same way he did with Iraq.
