Selective Service?

When are you suppose to register for selective service? How do you register? Are you required?

When you are 18 - and yes, it's the law.

If you have a driver's license, then most likely your state DMV will have already registered you. You will receive a confirmation letter and card in the mail about a week before your 18th birthday.

What if you don't have a driver's license? How can you register than?

How can you be sure that site is safe? Is there a safer way (non-online) to do it because risk of hackers stealing info?

Post Offices have SSS registration cards.

If you got your license before you're 18 (I got mine when I was 16), will the DMV still automatically register you? Or is it better to just register online/postcard?

Probably postcard because its safer than online.

Actually, I prefer the internet and doing my apps online was so much easier and more instantaneous. Not to mention that most websties are secured websites, so it's all good (but it's always good to have a health dose of caution).

If you apply for Finacial Ad, the fafsa will auto register you.

Also, remember that this is only for US Citizens. If your international, you don't have to worry about it.

"If you apply for Finacial Ad, the fafsa will auto register you."

not if your not 18 yet when you fill out your fafsa

It puts you in a queue.

and to get federal fin ad you have to be regsistered,

I'd check with your state DMV then. I can say for sure that Virginia does.

Whats the punishment if you forget to register?

Hiko:

Punishments of up to five years imprisonment and/or a $250,000 fine are only the beginning of your government's potential revenge.

24 states currently deny financial aid, and 5 states have a bill pending that would do this. State employment is denied in 18 states, with bills pending in 4. States in which admittance to public colleges and universities is denied: AL, AR, CO, ID, LA, NH, and TN. Bills to this effect are pending in IA and SC. Driver's licenses are currently denied in AR, OK, DE, GA, HI, AL and UT. Bills are pending in 23 other states

redski -

are you sure they register you? I registered online when I turned 18. Make sure you get confirmation in the mail that you have registered.

I am under the impression that there is currently no automatic registration of any kind availible. The DMV, as far as I know, does not auto-register. You msut register online or by US mail.

I also want to correct an earlier statement that was made: Yes, it is the law to register for the SS when you turn 18, but only for males.

soccerguy, I definitely did get the confirmation and the registration card without having done anything else.

"I definitely did get the confirmation and the registration card without having done anything else."

This is very odd. I am quite familiar with the law concerning these matters, and registration is not automatic. That's why they have fines and penalties for not registering. I don't knw what you did, but the SS cannot register you automatically. That would be a waste of government, I mean our, money wouldn't it? But since you said that you got confirmation, I guess you are registered. Very odd though.
