Self-Designed Major

Can anybody tell me what is a self-designed major...?
Is this something like you can major in a field which is not there in Smith's Course curriculum through other sources like various study abroad programs, five-college consortium etc..

Anybody willing to shed light over this..??

Thanks in advance!

A self designed major is where you choose from amongst Smith's course offerings to create a major tailored to some specific interest you have. They're intended for students who think they'd be best served by creating a major through mixing the courses offered by many different departments.

Say, "Gender and Media Studies" for example. For a self designed major in that you'd take some study of women and gender courses, some art courses, probably some government courses etc.

Self designed majors are not easy to do, and this should be stressed. Since Smith has no core curriculum, students already get a lot of freedom to tailor their coursework to their particular interest, and to do a self designed you have to prove that there's some special benefit to be gained by going outside of the normal structure, which is not simple, since hte normal structure is so loose already.

Ohk.. I got it COMPLETELY wrong.. lol.. Thanks a lot!
