self study AP chem

So here's my science curriculum for the next 3 years of high school:

sophomore: chemistry
junior: AP Biology
senior: AP Pyschics

But I really want to take AP chem, so I'm considering to self-study during my sophomore year. Is this possible or do I NEED regular chem as a prerequisite to do well?

It's not that easy to self-study AP chem.

Could you take AP Chem junior year along with AP Bio?

I wish I could take both, but I can only take 6 classes. I'm also required to take religion.

If self-studying AP Chem is really that difficult these were my other options I thought of:

1) take AP Chem instead of AP Bio
2) take online AP Chem
3) drop Spanish 3 and take both AP Bio and AP Chem

Good luck with that... I had trouble with AP Chem and it was not self study! It is a difficult course...

Yeah, I heard it was pretty tough...but I wonder if an online course is any good? I'm not sure if I csan do both AP CHem and AP Bio the same year.

AP Bio isn't offered at my school, but from what I hear it might actually be harder than AP Chem. But I guess a certain part of how hard a course is determined by the teacher and workload. But a lot of the AP Chem material was so far past what I learned in normal Chem that it was sometimes hard for me to grasp.

Yes. The AP Bio at my school is harder. it's one of the toughest classes at my school.

Do you think it's likely to score a 3 on the AP Chem test w/ self study or online? Also, is it possible to study for the AP chem test while taking regular chem during the year?

If you have a solid foundation of the concepts in regular chem, self-studying AP isn't really that difficult. There are a few things that AP has that are not in the regular chem curriculum though, so keep that in mind. I suggest getting together with an AP chem teacher at your school and see if he/she can provide any old exams or free response questions for you to work with. Maybe this teacher can help you out after or before school to work out any issues you might have with some of the AP material.

"see if he/she can provide any old exams or free response questions" thats a good idea It'sGr82BeAGator.

I'm also going to get a tutor.

The exam is pretty difficult (I got a 5, took the course in school). Your knowledge has be really flexible and you have to be able to link concepts together. Unless you're extremely dedicated, I wouldn't advise self studying for AP chem. Instead, take AP Chem in school and self study for Bio (which is more memorization and less application). Good luck

Also, does anyone know about the AP Psychology test?

AP Psychology is apparently an extremely easy test compared to some of the other ones like Physics C E&M. For AP Bio, the test is somewhat easy but some people have very hard classes. I wouldn't recommend self-studying AP Chem because it goes way beyond even an introductory Chem class.

Hmm... it depends how good your sophomore chem class was. We didn't learn too much new material in AP chem because we learned so much in Honors. I think that I still could have gotten a 5 on the AP test with just some self-studying on the side. Some chem classes aren't very good though... I'd suggest looking at some online material now, and trying to figure out whether you're up for it mentally or not.

If you are determined and motivated, just do it. My dad self studied Bio, Chem, Physics all in college and ended up becoming 1st Rank in the science field, hence receiving an honorable award.

You could just take it online for supplementary purposes. I hear JHU has a good AP Chem online program.

everyone i know thinks ap chem is a really hard class
i think it would be pretty difficult to self study, unless you have a natural ability for it

Yeah, I know what you guys mean by it being hard...And it seems lame to me, but my parents won't let me take it online.

Do you think a tutor will help?

A tutor would definitely help, I had one and I was actually taking the course with a real (but horrible) teacher.

self study your foreign language man!!! I self studied german 1,2,3 in 6 weeks. what a joke HS language classes are. it's pointless to actually TAKE foreign language classes in hs. that will open up a class for you so you can take chem. you don't want to self study chem, because it is a great class and you will miss all the labs. you will have no trouble doing a language. just memorize conjugations, articles, word order, some vocab, and that's it. nothing like chemistry!
