Self-study AP Eng Lit/Comp?

OK so Hi! I'm a rising senior. ok

I took AP Eng Lang/Comp last year (got a 4 on exam) and was originally scheduled to take AP Eng Lit/Comp this year, but due to scheduling conflicts, I had to drop it.

I was wondering, is it worth it to self study and take this exam (it will be my fifth for the year)? Anything that gets me out of college english is fine by me. Also, I was wondering, would it help/not affect admissions chances at a school like Duke/ND if I took it? Thanks a bunch.

Well, what do you plan on majoring in? If it’s not related to english, then they shouldn’t care much

but anyway the fact that you originally had the course means you are a good writer, and thus will do fine

Engineering.

I’m gonna see where I go to school first. Applying ED to Duke, so if I get in there it won’t matter; they’ll make you take english anyways. So chances are I’m not going to take it.

@Pratt: Self study it! The general consensus is that the AP Lit exam is harder than the Language one, but while that may be true, the reality is that they are both extremely similar. Our dean of students is a former AP Lang and Lit teacher (15 years I believe) and she is also our AP coordinator, and whenever she sees a student that is doing well in AP Lit at our school (we take it junior year) she advises them to take the language test too.

Basically the Lit will be more poetry oriented. Unless you have an exceptional inability to understand poetry, then I think it would take you minimal work to teach yourself the parts that you didn’t learn in Lang and get at least a 4.

As for being an Engineer, I’ve heard that at many schools, the two AP Englishes count for the same credit, so a 5 on one of the two would be a safe bet to test out of your college class. You just have to decide what would be an easier route for you: Brush up on Lit now and get a 5 to test out, or give your self some free time now and pay for the course in college and have to worry about it then. (or go to duke and have no choice. lol)
