Self-Study AP-- lots of work to even start

I talked to the dean today about self-studying AP Computer Science and it looks like it's a lot of work to even get started. I have to find a teacher so they know I know the info before taking the test. I KNOW I can get a 4-5 on the test. I don't see why I need a teacher to "verify" that I know the stuff. She did say that they need to do this to give me credit. I don't even think I want credit, i just want to take the darn exam.

Did you have to go through all this stuff? Can I just take the AP test at a different testing center without informing my school about it (just sign up and take it somewhere else)? I was really hoping to self-study multiple subjects (Computer Sci, Psycho, Studio Art, Human Geo) but this is really turning me away from it.

No, unless your homeschooled, it has to go through the school. I also encountered red tape, but it was more like, "No. Sophomores have never taken AP exams anywhere" -->my school is retarded!

I see. I hate how the teachers don't think you can do something. I'm not like the rest of the students. Arg.

I'm going to see how well this goes. I may just tell her that I want to self-study around 3 APs. See what she says then.

Umm, I just signed up for an AP w/o telling anyone (I hadn't even studied it yet) and no one cared... why not just not tell them?

It came up when the science head had to talk to me about them canceling one of the classes I signed up for, AP Chem. I wasn't sure what class I was going to choose now (I've decided on Physics Hon) and somehow we ended up talking about AP and I told her I was planning to self-study. She then told me I should talk to the dean.

Where do you sign up? The collegeboard site doesnt seem to let you..

Well, the school sent me a form... and I signed up for whatever I felt like. I figured this is how it works at all schools.

In my school, you can apply for all 37 APs as long as you pay up, with only a raised eyebrow but no questions asked. Doesn't mean you will take the exam in your school though.

If you don't want school credit, just tell them that. Hopefully they'll have the sense to realize that it's your money that's being spent, not theirs.

I did that.
I didn't take ANY of my APs in my school. And never will.

yep, teachers at my school are willing to spend absolutely ZERO extra time for independent study, I think there's more work getting started than actually on the course and all...
