Self Studying AP Classes?

Not sure if this is the right section of the forum, feel free to move, seemed this didn't fit anywhere else. I am really getting serious about self studying an AP class over the summer. I may do AP Computer Science A since I am already proffecient in Java, which according to College Board is what they use. I was wondering if anyone can shed some light on how I go about self studying an AP class, and if it will look good to colleges. Do I contact my school? Do I need a specific book? I am so confused!

Wow, you really are stressed...

You don't have to contact your school first off, you just register for the test through your school

You don't have to study over the summer, over the school year would suffice.

Yes, it looks ambitious towards colleges, but don't do it just for that reason

Buy a good textbook for the subject and a good review book for when the test is coming up....

If you hurry, you can self study for the test this may

AP tests are available to anyone who knows the subject, even if your school doesnt offer the class. If your school doesnt offer comp science, then yes, self studying will look good(as long as you pass)

AP classes are just classes that help you learn the material on the AP test the best.

Haha sr6622, yes I am super stressed. But this actually relieves some of the pressure I felt due to my having to take religion. Now I can get in 4 AP's in junior year.

One more thing, is it possible for my school to not let me take the AP test?

Yes, I apologize for the double post, but I just talked to my GC (I am in programming class right now :) ) and she said I am not aloud to self study AP classes. She just said our school does not allow it, but at first she didn't even know what I was talking about. I think she just THINKS our school doesn't allow it, and really has no idea how to go about letting me do it. An suggestions!?

Your school definitely cant disallow it. If they do, contact AP

Find your schools AP coordinator (should be one of the guidance counselors) and talk to him.

Oh man I am going to feel all rebelous (spelling?) now. I still can not decide a relatively easy AP I can self study that will benefit me for an engineering college. Any input on that is much appreciated.
