Self-Studying AP Psychology

I’m going to be taking AP Stats, AP Physics, AP Lang, and AP US next year and I wanted to know how hard AP Psych is and whether or not it would be relatively easy to self-study it. I have heard a lot of different opinions about AP Psych, some say it is super easy and others say it is time consuming. Those of you who have taken it, please let me know how it is.

I self-studied AP psych this year and got a 5. I would say go for it! If you have at least a passing interest in the subject and are willing to devote a couple weekends to learning the material, you’re practically guaranteed a five.

There are already a number of great threads on here that helped me prepare to self-study but here’s what I did:

I bought Barron’s review book back in November but didn’t look at it until April (I had to study for Euro, Bio, and French as well). Personally, Barron’s is my favourite. I panicked a week before the test and bought Princeton’s Review which was a waste of money since I didn’t open it once. I’m sure it’s a good text though, apparently more concise and better for cramming. Either one can get you a five.

My method of learning the material was highlighting and taking notes. With barrons, I read through each chapter and highlighted all of the vocab and important passages then did the quizzes for each section. After I read through the whole book, I copied out the highlighted parts into a notebook and then I highlighted my notebook. Afterwards, I did the three full practice tests in barrons. (The diagnostic one at the front and the two at the back.) In all, I’d say it took me two full days to study.

I found the actual test very similar to barrons in regards to difficulty so there were no surprises. Overall, my advice for self-studying is just choose a prep book, study with whatever method works for you and KNOW YOUR VOCAB! It’s one big vocab test. Not that the terms are difficult, just numerous. Also, try to start studying as early as possible. It’s definitely manageable to study the weekend before the test and get a five but it’s always better to plan ahead, especially since you’re taking other ap exams as well.

Once again, go for it! And let me know if you have any more questions

You’re so helpful! Thanks so much! And congrats on that 5
