I’m self-studying AP World History this year with one of my friends. I’m not sure how to go about doing it though. We’re really behind but we’re about to really take this seriously and stay focused. I take APES and APUSH in school, but my school doesn’t offer APWH.
I’m totally confused about the essays. I know there are 3 types: DBQ, Change-over-time, and comparative but how do I write these. Are the APWH DBQs similar to the format used in APUSH?

So far, I have:
-The Earth and Its People, 5th Edition AP Edition (textbook)
-Prinction Review AP World History
-AP World History: An Essential Course Book by Ethel Wood

And I plan on borrowing these books from the library just so I can get more info about World History:
-Little History of the World by E.H. Gombrich
-World History for Dummies by Peter Haugen
-The Complete Idiot’s Guide to World History by Timothy Hall
-The People’s History of the World by J.M. Roberts
-The Penguin History of the World by J.M. Roberts
-National Geographic: Almanac of the World by Patricia Daniels
-A Short History of the World by J.M. Roberts
-Sources of World History (primary sources)

Is there anything else you would recommend? Should I get more books?
How did you self-study APWH (if you did)?

It’s just something a few of my friends and I thought of doing because we took advanced World History last year. We thought this year woould be ideal while the info is still fresh.

grab a PR book, and read thru that to familiarize yourself with the test too.

for AP WH DBQ’s don’t both using outside info, just stick to the documents with limited outside info (do include some). make 3 body paragraphs, which themes of each document, called “grouping” which relate to your thesis.

IMO, self-studying APWH is a bad idea. The course is so full of (what I consider) boring information. There’s so much and it’s so dense, it was hard keeping up when I took it in school last year… I don’t even know how somebody can manage it on their own without a set learning schedule.

I would have to agree. Unless you are absolutely passionate about world history (and are self-studying for the joy and love of learning), I don’t recommend APWH as a self-study.

I’m currently taking the class and all the assigned reading is such a pain in the ass. However, if you do chose to self-study, I recommend reading through the textbook, and then reviewing with PR. For essays, PR does a solid job teaching a formulaic approach to CCOT, C/C, and DBQs.
