Okay, so I have recently heard that the AP scholar award does not really help you get into college at all - is this true?

Also, I was wondering if taking 25 AP exams would be impressive to colleges; I know there have been some kids who have taken 20+ exams in the past and done really well getting into colleges. It's a lot of cash and work though but I think I can do it. However, several people told me that self-studying some APs doesn't really help you at all.

I think it shows passion and dedication. It’s pointless to take that many, though, you’ll seem quite weird.

For example, in my school we are not allowed to take Calculus until after a whole year of precalculus and three years of algebra, geometry, and trigonometry, and many students took algebra and/or geometry in middle school—but I did not, because my middle school sucked. So because of this, I have to take precalculus senior year and am in trigonometry this year. I am self-studying Calculus right now due to my frustration with the curriculum, and because I want to learn Calculus really badly. I enjoy it.

I love physics quite a lot, however, my school does not offer AP Physics C, so I am self-studying for that as well to show my love and passion for physics. I will take AP Physics B senior year too.

And APUSH, I am taking the exam for that because there was a quota on the amount of students allowed to take APUSH due to limited seats, and most of the seats were filled quite quickly. To show my love for politics and history, I will take that exam as well.

If you’re taking a bunch of APs just for the sake of taking APs, then you’re doing it all wrong, and it might hurt you more than help you.

Okay thank you. See, I was going to get the AP scholar award as a sophomore but now I’m rethinking it. I was to take 7 AP tests this year but I may drop the Macro and Micro Economics exams because I’m not sure what benefit they will give me. I am in 4 AP classes and I am self studying 1 other (Statistics.) However, I wonder why those kids with 20+ AP’s did so well then?

PS: Before anyone calls me out, I will admit that I have lied somewhat in other posts about my information as far as AP’s go. Not that it harmed anybody.

Yeah, don’t just take random APs. Take the ones you’re interested in and take those exams. If you take over 20+ and you’re not interested in some of them, then there’s not that much of a purpose besides wasting $$ and possibly getting some college credit. Plus, colleges would probably think you’re a no life instead of awesome.

I do have a “life” outside of school, and besides the relaxing etc, I have extracurriculars - robotics, tennis, piano, and some community service
