I'm a Canadian 10th grader (sophomore) looking to self-study a couple APs and taking the exams in May. My school offers 6 APs in total. I'll be taking Microeconomics next year (most likely) and I'll take the remainder of our school's APs in senior year (Calc AB, Chem, English Lit, Euro History, Psych).

For junior year, I'm thinking of taking 5 exams and going for AP National Scholar (the Canadian version). I've chosen a few but I need some advice on what my final two will be.

Likely picks:
1) Microeconomics (the only one that has a class)
2) Macroeconomics
3) Environmental Science
4) Undecided
5) Undecided

Undecided pool:
Biology
Comparative Government & Politics
English Language & Composition
Human Geography
Physics B
Statistics
U.S. History
U.S. Government & Politics
World History

Basically, I'm in the process of choosing my final two APs for study and I'd like some feedback or comments. I'm only considering the ones listed in the undecided pool. I don't want to take APs that I can take classes for in senior year (i.e. Calculus AB) or ones that I have no interest in (i.e. Italian Language & Culture).

I'm just toying with the idea at the moment, I know that self-studying for 4 exams will be grueling. Please just comment on which ones are manageable, which ones are valuable, or anything else I may need to know.

I have read oasis's thread so I don't need the link to that, thanks.

Human Geography and Statistics are probably the easiest. How useful an exam is to you depends on what you intend on majoring in, but Physics and Biology are generally considered useful (but they are also the harder exams).

definitely go with environmental science even though i see you already have it as your likely pick. i also say go with bio because it’s a pretty important ap but it’s hard to self-study and you’ll have to spend the whole year self-studying it. however, bio and environmental science complement each other nicely. easy aps are stats and human geo because minimal studying is involved. but english is also a choice because you don’t need to study for it really

Human Geography and Comparative Government. Self studied Human Geo the night before. and Macro the week before. I’ll be self-studying Comparative next year most likely. And if not, then Psych, so yo could try that if possible. Also, you can self-study history tests with good textbooks and review books. Although the formats for essays between US history vs. World history are much different. Stay clear of self studying any science other than Environmental Science. I disagree with self-studying for Stats, it’s easy, but it’s better to have a teach for this one.

So far, I’ve pretty much decided to keep those three APs.

With my last two, I’m looking for a balance. I don’t want it to seem like I took all of the easy APs for the Scholar distinctions but I also don’t want to drive myself crazy taking amazingly difficult exams in addition to all the other things I do in and out of school…

Well if you’re looking for balance, I’d say self-study World History. The FRQ format is a little easier to learn whereas US requires a lot more analysis. Don’t get me wrong World and Euro do as well, but it has a very specific rubric which can be learned. While Macro was very easy to learn, you’re going to need to grasp the concepts of Micro well before moving onto it. So that’s not going to be terribly easy. I suppose Environmental would be the easiest and Human Geo is a complete joke. So if you don’t want to take those and challenge yourself a little you could do English Lang OR Statistics. If you’re good at English, take that. Lots of people who are great at it get 5s easily.(not me though :P) There’s not a lot of prep other than reading and writing as much as you can. Stats isn’t too hard, and most majors require getting first year stats done. But again, I found it much more helpful to have a teacher. People on CC say it’s easy to self study though.

Well that was a lot, if you’re looking to balance it, I’d probably say to go with English and either World or Stats. But probably World would be better imo.

Go for human geography and then a harder/longer one like biology. Human geography is pretty easy ( I didnt’ finish Barron’s until I was driving to the test center =] and probably 5’ed it) . The extra time will allow you to focus on a longer AP, since the other 3 are pretty easy too.

I’d say do what interests you the most, because you are more likely to sit down and take time to learn the material. This happened to me this year, I self-studied US gov and politics, but each time I sat down to study, I couldn’t focus. I just wanted to study something else.

human geo for sure. and english language and composition is easy, as long as you get practice writing the different kinds of essays

also, i noticed that psych wasnt in your list of undecided. maybe you should look into that, i self studied it this year, and i’m pretty sure i 5’ed it.
