Selling yourself or just talking about yourself?

I have a dilemma, in the essay, did you guys try to sell yourself? While writing my essay, I've found that throughout I have been trying to display myself in a bright light, seemingly selling myself to the colleges.

I'm not sure if that is the way to go.

here's an example of something I wrote

". Regardless of the work, he always demanded 100%. I have taken that message by heart, as I will never fail to try my hardest at anything I do. "

that second sentence, selling myself.

I think the way you put it in that sentence sounds great. I'm applying atm too, and I've been trying to sort of subtly sell throughout my essays. I think the thing to watch out for is not sounding like youre trying to brag.

One other thing to think about--
I just realized that I pretty much put the exact same sentence in a short answer on my Yale app. Thousands of other applicants probably put the same sentence. If you have space and if it'd fit coherently in the essay, maybe you should give an example of yourself trying your hardest at everything you do. Just a thought, it sounds fine as it is, too :)

I never said anything about myself in a direct way. I just gave examples from which the admission officers can hopefully figure out who I am.
I don't rembmer anymore where I saw this, but someone said that a good way to present yourself is not just telling who you are, but showing.

Right: show, don't tell.

Some good advice at U.Va. Office of Admission Essays

I gave an example right after that, I feel it is too long though
