Semester at Accademia dell'Arte in Italy

I recently learned that Muhlenberg offers a semester abroad at the Accademia dell’Arte in Arezzo, Italy, to its threatre students.

My son is a freshman in a BFA Acting program at another school that is going to be offering the same thing, and I was wondering if anybody connected with Muhlenberg has stories to share about the Accademia.

I started a thread about this in the Theatre/Drama majors forum also.

Several of my daughter’s friends did it last semester. It was definitely on her radar, but she chose London because studying in London has been a dream of hers since middle school. She also was not quite as interested in the training she’d get there, and wanted more classical training through Queen Mary. Everyone she knows who’s been to Arezzo has had a great time. I think the only real drawbacks were that they were geographically quite removed from in major metropolitan areas, so there was little to do outside of school. But again, I think it was a memorable experience for everyone who has gone.

Thanks, Teriwtt. Yes, I noticed that Arezzo is 50 miles from Florence, and the Accademia isn’t actually even in Arezzo itself, though it is apparently within walking distance.

Probably the students there have far fewer extras that they are tempted to spend money on than those in London. :)

I’ve only heard positive things about it. I was seriously considering it for my semester abroad so I talked to several people who had been and they all said it was amazing, best semester of their life, etc. etc. They said you usually spend six hours in class a day, and it’s quite tiring but really rewarding. I guess there’s also a class excursion to Florence and you do get a fall break so you can travel. A woman who works there actually came to Muhlenberg and did a short workshop with those of us who were interested and it was really fun, interesting, different…
