I want to take the spring semester off, because I just really need a break from academics. Any ideas on what to do? I want to do some type of service oriented work, such as Americorps, for a 6 to 9 month period. Any advice from people who have taken a semester off, or insight on where I should look for such service opportunities?

I did AmeriCorps for a summer session. I would suggest simply studying abroad or doing an internship program in DC.

There’s also the Disney College Program! That’s what I’m doing next semester, and I’m super excited! Check it out! There’s still time to apply!

^^^What does that position entail?

LMAO. DCP is the worst job ever. I did it and happily quit before my time was up. Disney will work your ass to the bone, for pennies, and then take about half of your paycheck back for Manhattan-priced rent.

Some people don’t like it. Much more people love it. It’s a job, and it’s a theme park job. Yes, they take rent out of your pay check, but frankly that’s just like paying rent anywhere else. In my opinion: I can work retail at home or I can work retail in Disney World. It wasn’t too hard of a decision Plus it’s not really something a lot of people do for the money. People go because they love Disney, because they want to experience something new, and a lot of people go because they want to work for Disney in the future.

Check out the website and decide for yourself. I’ve heard more than enough positive stories, and I know that some people just aren’t cut out for this internship. Personally I’m thrilled to get out of here for awhile and work at Disney World. Yes, it’s hard work. Yes they work you a lot of hours. It’s a JOB. But those with open minds who welcome new experiences and the opportunity to meet new people and gain work experience will enjoy it. The worst thing you could ever do when making decisions about college or internships is to listen to one person’s negative experience and decide for yourself what you’re going to do.

If you’re interested I suggest to visit the website, find out what the program has to offer, and decide if it’s right for you.

The Disney website sure makes 50-60 hours per week of housekeeping, shelving or bell service (without tips!) for minimum wage sound romantic…

It’s just something you have to want to do. Like I said, it’s not about the money. Plus with students going through college it’s not like a lot of places are offering anything more than minimum wage anyway.

From what you posted above, it sounds like you haven’t even done the program yet. You’re taking all of this from what Disney is saying on their website as truth. Obviously they’re not going to say what really happens there.

$6.40/hour plus 13+ hour days working behind a cart is not fun, no matter how many mickey ears they try spin on it.

Also, they make the claim (aka lie) that no student will work more than 40 hours a week. This is complete BS. Complete. You’re lucky if you get your promised one day off a week.

But whatever, have fun.

ETA: Google “Disney College Program, Slave Labor” for fun.

crosses Disney off of list
I knew that damn mouse was up to no good.

They don’t make the claim that no student will work more than 40 hours in a week, as posted in a post above. Also, they pay more than $6.40 an hour. The pay is at least minimum wage, which is about what you’re going to find at any job you look for as a college student. It’s not going to be much different than what I’m working at home right now except…well…it’s Disney World. I haven’t been able to travel much in my life, I wasn’t able to go to a fancy out-of-state school- or even a great in-state school- so I consider this my chance to finally be able to get out and see another part of the world for awhile. I don’t consider these kinds of jobs above me, and I’m totally open to the experience.

Hi. I worked at Disney. I did the program. What part of that don’t you understand? I know what they told me. I know what I was paid. I received my checks, not you. I know how many hours I worked. I know where I worked. I was there. I don’t need to read their site.

Are you just not comprehending this?

lol, just to emphasize this quote
The person who hasn’t done the internship is trying to tell person who has done the internship what goes on at the internship?

I’m no expert but I think the person who was there probably knows more than person relying on a website.

Hi. I was accepted for the program. I know how much they told me I was going to make. I know that the website says that you can be scheduled up to 50+ hours during peak seasons.

Maybe those conditions applied to you, but they don’t anymore.

my curiosity got the best of me and googled it:

and wikipedia
this was ten seconds of searching.

Congrats on successfully searching for negative DCP experiences. This is incredibly biased! orlandofloridasucks? Of course there aren’t going to be any positive reviews!! Now try searching for positive ones. Seriously, you’re going to find different sides for every story. Not to mention usually people don’t say if they’re talking about Disneyland’s program and Disney World’s, and the two are very different. Usually I can tell where people are coming from when they talk about bad experiences. The key is that you have to know what you’re getting into, and I think a lot of people don’t.

wow, calm down.
i’m not even in this stupid argument. i just googled disney college program and this is what i found.

really, it’s not even that serious. i will make sure to not post anything negative on the almigty disney again. i wouldn’t want to anger its followers.

evidently you’re taking comments about disney personally, so you have magical time at disey, i’m going to go make a sandwich.

You were acting like you were apart of this. You made an effort to go out and search for negative reviews. There are literally thousands and thousands of people who will have all kinds of views on this experience. Don’t judge just because of one person’s review, or because of a quick google search for negative reviews. If someone’s really interested in doing something like this they should pay attention to all sides of the story. They need to find out exactly what they are getting into because clearly some of these people who give negative reviews of the program didn’t do good enough research. If it’s not for you it’s not for you, but that doesn’t mean this isn’t right for thousands of other people.

Make me one too. Ham. Extra cheese. Hold the mayo.

And never mess with the mouse, kid.

did you want the mouse on your sandwich too?
