Semi-Finalist List 2012!

Thanks wcpcy12- called the number, my son did not advance
4.58 weighted GPA, will have AS degree by the time he graduates HS
Robotics, Tennis, Part time job, spanish honor society, math team, key club, multiple volunteer orgs.
very nice when I called. Had to wait a while, they must be getting a number of calls.
At least we can move on to the other opportunities and stop waiting!

I asked when they would post the list of semifinalists. He said it would be posted after the first of the year.

This is ridiculous. I have perfect grades, a perfect SAT score, and amazing-I mean AMAZINGGGGG-extracurriculars. This is the most poorly run scholarship program I have ever encountered. HORRIBLE. I am going on strike and never buying a coke manufactured product again… I HATE YOU COCA COLA COMPANY.

Just called the number, spoke to a representative. My son didn’t advance.

Sorry to hear that, and sorry to those of you who posted that you/your kids didn’t advance. Its hard to say how/why some advance while others don’t, but all of these kids are talented, have worked hard, and donated so much of their time, I have no doubt all will do well in their college endeavors and receive many scholarships. Good luck to all in the future!

herewegonow

There is something to be said about character…being perfect on paper means nothing if you can’t carry yourself with grace.

I called and heard, “hey, it’s Ryan Seacrest”. At least I got a laugh from the recording.

No, as expected, I did not advance. Best of luck to those who do!

herewegonow- I understand your frustration, and Coke is not good for you anyway (LOL). This scholarship has been great for many students, and I am sure that it is a difficult task to weed 84,000 applications down to 2200. I do wish that Coke would have enough respect for all of the students that applied to provide them with timely responses and denials as well as acceptances.

I hope that all of the students that advanced received emails, if not, they will have less than 2 weeks to get the application compelted if they find their name on the semi-finalist list!

Good luck to all that advanced!

As expected, I didn’t advance. Honestly, I was kind of relieved—getting the application done on time would’ve been a challenge.

kameronsmith, that is sort of what my son said. He felt that if he has not cured cancer or single handedly saved a 3rd world country from starvation that he did not have a chance at making the final 250, and he knew the next step was going to be brutal!

Exactly. The only reason I completed the initial application was because it required almost no work on my part.

I think students should be allowed to vent on CC, as long as they can do so without being offensive. The folks who didn’t learn until today have had a rough few weeks and I don’t think you can relate well to what they have been through, maryvmc. Let’s not be judgmental and I hope you have as much grace as you expect everyone else to be showing when things don’t go so well for you.

I agree vlines. The entire handling of this process has been pretty shoddy. Not too much respect for the candidates, I’d say. Stringing them along with “everyone will get an email” when in fact, I’m sure they never sent emails to those who did not advance. I know this website is a small sampling of those who applied, but not one person who didn’t advance posted that they received an email. This just makes it more nerve-wracking for these kids during an already stressful time for most of them.

I’m interested in finding out what the 2200 semifinalists applications looked like compared to the other 82200 and how coca cola distinguishes what’s semi finalist material from what’s not.
Dont mean to be rude at all, I’m just curious.

from twitter about 3:20 PM EST:

Hey applicants! We sent out status notifications via email to all who applied. Be sure to check your spam folder!

It is all computerized. They run the apps through a system based on numbers, no one knows what the formula is.

I don’t think it’s based on ECs unless they count hours/number of ECs.

It is all objective not subjective. The semifinalist competition is subjective.

Oh…that’s odd.

What happened to engaging in community service for the purpose of making the world a better place? The sense of entitlement and lack of respect that I am picking up from this thread is pretty discouraging.

If it was all computerized, why did it take so long to get the online applications processed? Seems unlikely. Or maybe they need some new computer programmers that can set up the system better AND make sure emails get sent? LOL Either way, I responded to the tweet from 3:20 stating that we checked spam, and I think that their emails are stuck in their “outbox” (not our “spam” boxes).

I think that waiting and being told “soon” for weeks has a few people on edge, thumzup. Along with all of the other deadlines everyone is up against. Not everyone is negative or has a sense of entitlement. Most just wanted an answer so they could get started on the ap or move on. That is what the frustration is about.

I think a lot of people still do community service for the right reasons, thumzup, but it’s become such a huge determining factor in admissions processes, that unfortunately, now people do those things to put it on their resume.

My son called and did not advance. 4.5wt GPA,36ACT,2340SAT,major ec’s including music industry internship and on board of nat’l non profit. Very hard for him to understand. And he feels this is a bad sign for his college apparently. Thoughts, anyone?
