Thanks for letting me know! I’ll definitely be applying to the spring then if there’s any senators who still have openings, but who knows with corona. Also going in the spring would be super interesting as it’s after the election, And at least for me my town has been going through a battle over a police oversight committee, and something that appears suspiciously coop like. So being able to witness political behavior at a national level and being able to compare it to how it influences local and vice versa would be really interesting; as how those in power act have real life consequences.
I went through Jon Tester (MT). The other senator from my state had zero information on the page program so I only did it through tester. I got a letter of recommendation from my shooting coach and from one of my teachers. I later found out that my teacher used to work for Tester and knew the person who read my application so I pretty much got super lucky on that one. I did not have any political experience but there are lots of easy ways to get political experience with the election coming up if you volunteer for an election campaign on the state or national level or even on the local level (I would not recommend volunteering for a rep and then applying to a dem or visa versa) you can also apply to be a page int he senate for your state senate which is more experience and a chance to make connections. I honestly have no idea about the multiple senators thing and all I can think is whoever was amazing enough to create the problem of being chosen by two senators must be the luckiest person on earth. I’ve also heard that the summer session is more about who you know and the semesters are known to be more prestigious and more about your qualifications than your connections. You can also try and contact some of the senators interns that are in your area and see if they are willing to talk to you because most are college students or recently graduated who are home right now because of rona.
Does anyone know anything about the program for PA? I cab’t find info on either website
I applied and got accepted through my state’s junior senator. Right now since he’s not one of the 30 most senior senators I’m on the “waitlist” for the spring session (if they have it). My state’s senior senator was already sponsoring someone for the spring but his office did offer to hold my application as a backup in case that person drops out. I don’t have any prior political experience and I don’t have any personal connections to either of my senators. If you’re interested in applying and don’t know if you have enough “connections,” still go for it!! You’ll never know unless you try!
wow congrats! what senator & state did you get accepted for?
did anyone else get in for spring 2021?
@mag6789 I’m on the waitlist for the spring since my senator doesn’t have a spot right now.
Hey guys! I’m highly interested in this program, but I’m slightly confused by the application process. Both my senators (FL) do not have a portion of their website dedicated towards the page program, so is it safe to assume that they will not be given a slot for the summer of 2021? Also, does anyone know when the applications are open and when they are due for summer 2021? Lastly, have any of you applied as an out-of-state applicant since your senators aren’t sponsoring a page?
Hello, I applied out of state last year for the summer program and never heard back, and I plan to try and apply again this summer out of state
I would email your senator’s office and ask. I am pretty sure that the senators do not know if they will get a page or not. From what I have found the majority party gets more pages in the senate so while spring might already be chosen a lot could change for the summer sessions. I think the only way that your senator has no consideration for a page is if they are up for reelection because senate offices have to request pages and then they have to be approved by the majority leader (I am pretty sure) so the pages get picked about 5 to 6 months before the session starts.
Also while I think it is different for each office when I applied for the summer session I was supposed to turn in the application by January 1st. And they are probably open now since pages have already been chosen for the spring session. If your senator is up for reelection I would wait till you know they won again and then look on the website again or email the offices and ask. As far as applying out of state there are some advantages and disadvantages to both. Smaller states usually tend to be colder to outsiders and probably wouldn’t choose you over someone from their own state. At the same time, smaller states do not have a ton of people turn in applications. At least for Montana, I believe that there are several times where no one applies for any session, and in that case, you could probably be considered. SO I would recommend applying to less populated states and hope that no one from that state is also turning in an application.
I submitted my application through Schumer (D-NY) for the spring session on October 15th. I have not heard back yet but I think that is okay since I turned it in so recently. Has anyone else applied for spring 2020 through Schumer?
just because they don’t have an application doesn’t mean they don’t have a page slot! I would call or email their office. for summer 2021 they tend to be due in the early spring but it depends on the senator. I applied to a lot of out of state senators for spring since I couldn’t find my senators’ application, and I actually heard back from a few. the application process is long as many offices take a while to respond or never do, but don’t give up!!
@colorado89039 Woah! I found another Coloradan. I’m looking to apply to this program in the next few years: was Senator Bennett very open to accepting a page? What was the process like?
Well, it looks like the spring 2021 session was just cancelled by the page board, according to Senator Shumer’s website. I feel really bad for those who applied and got accepted and can’t go now.
Aw that’s so sad! Do you have the link to the article saying they canceled it?
I was wondering, are you allowed to apply to multiple senators for the Senate page program?
Hi, late to this thread. Since the 2021 summer session got canceled, I am applying for the fall session, however, I had a bit of a predicament I was wondering if someone could help with. I am in our school’s marching band, and we begin our season around the very end of May. In the case I was to be accepted, it is frankly too big of an opportunity to pass upon. Therefore, I would have to quit band sometime within the season to do the program. However, if results do not come back until later, such as August or late July, it would be too late in the season to quit, so I’m trying to figure out information for when you receive the decisions.
Thanks
Hey! I’m a former page from last spring. The Senate is usually a very…well…unpredictable place, and the Page program has to fit into that unpredictability. I applied for the 2020 Spring session in September of 2019, I found out in November my Senator had decided to sponsor me, but I didn’t find out until just before Christmas in 2019 that I started Jan. 27. I would imagine that with how the program is going now, and because of just how many kids have been waiting for those spots, most of them will probably go to senior senators. Those from the most senior offices (Durbin, Schumer, McConnell, Thune, and Leahy) will usually find out first, much earlier. Depending on who your sponsor would be, you could find out as early as April or as late as August. There were kids in my class that found out in November, and there were a couple of pages that found out a week before they started.
Do newer senators usually not get page slots? My home state senator only got sworn in this year…
