D got 3’s on the AP English and AP Chem tests. Some of the schools she is applying to will give her credit, others will not.
First I was thinking that she shouldn’t submit the scores for admission. If she winds up going to one of the schools that will give her credit (or place her in a higher level class), she can submit them to the school once she is admitted.
THEN I was wondering how the admissions officers would look at her transcript, seeing that she took AP classes, but not seeing the AP test scores on her transcript, and possibly assuming she scored lower.
Any advice/perspective would be appreciated, thanks!
You do not send official AP score reports (the ones you have to pay for) with your application. Only send those official reports to the school you end up attending (for the credit, etc.)
The CommonApp has a testing section where you can self-report test scores, and this is where you can indicate the AP scores. I don’t think scores of 3 will hurt her application, as it is considered passing/qualified (although some schools may only accept 4/5 for actual course credit…it depends on the school).
I’d send them, so they won’t assume a 1 or 2.
Actually, college adcoms don’t look for the tests and scores for admission. What they want to see is the student taking the class and getting a grade of B or higher.
You simply don’t list the tests and scores (not all students who take the class take the test, if only because of cost, or scheduling problems. )
Obviously if you scored a 5 (or a 4) you can list it but it’s not really a tipping point either way.
In our case I’d simply not list the tests and scores.
