Sending creative writing to colleges

Hi, I have recently taken a summer high school course at Georgetown in creative writing.

During the course, I have written some flash fiction that I might be willing put in my application to supplement my test scores, GPA, ECs, etc.

Most of my works contain vulgar language and and subjects like drugs, sex, and violence (though not used in a gratuitous way, so to speak) or are somewhat disturbing in nature like insanity or horror. While I might be able to conclude that if it’s acceptable to have the aforementioned content in my work during the course, it should be okay with admissions officers, I have to keep in mind that this is college admissions, not creative writing class. Will I give a bad impression if some of my works contain the things I mentioned, even if they’re well-written and intelligent?

Also, I was wondering how common it is for students to submit fiction or poetry to admissions officers.

Thanks.

I would not send creative writing samples to admissions. As a rule admissions officers are not looking for more things to read. Additionally the topics of your writing could well be turn-offs to them.

Agreed with @happy1. Besides the fact that the topics in your creative writing samples are controversial and can turn off the adcoms, adcoms don’t want additional things to read or look at. It would only be a burden and won’t help your chances significantly.

My fears exactly. Thank you.

Put down that you took the creative writing class a Gtown on your application and that will be enough.

If you wouldn’t show it to your grandmother or your younger cousin, don’t show it to any adcom.
