Sending in Update for "Current or Most Recent Year Courses"

Hi all,

Back in the fall when I filled out the Common Application, I thought I knew which courses I would be taking for the entire year. One of these courses was a U.S. History course offered through my local community college called “U.S. History before 1877” in my second semester. After taking the complement to this course (U.S. History since 1877) in my first semester, I have decided not to take the other course, instead opting to take Introduction to Women’s and Gender Studies.

How do I go about updating colleges on my decision? Will I be penalized if my Common Application does not match my transcript in the case that I am admitted? Also, how will colleges view the change?

Thanks for any and all input.

Best,

CJ

You would need to update each college. The procedure may vary by college, whether you can update via the applicant portal or whether you should send an email.

It’s fine; you’re just substituting a class.

If there is no significant change in course rigor, it should be fine. However, you should still contact all the schools you applied ASAP.
