Sending SAT scores via Collegeboard

Hey guys,

My family and I are first generation immigrants to the United States, so forgive my ignorance concerning the college application/admissions process in the States.

As a high school junior I recently took the SAT Reasoning test for the first time. A few days ago I received notification that my scores were ready. I think my scores are fairly decent, all things considered, so I'm not really concerned about retaking the test. Collegeboard informed me that it can send scores to colleges/other programs.

What exactly is the purpose of sending scores to colleges via Collegeboard? Is it directly tied to the applications process or is it something different? Is this the canonical way in which colleges receive your SAT scores? Can I send them in another way? Furthermore, should I send scores only to schools that I have a high chance of applying to, or should I be more broad? Roughly how many score reports should I send out?

Concerning the other programs: are these scholarships? If so, what are types of qualifications are there for receiving this type of aid? High scores? Belonging to a specific demographic of the population? A combination?

I've asked quite a few questions, so feel free to answer only one or two of them.

Thank you!

It’s the way you send scores to colleges you apply to. You should send them a month before your application is due in senior year!

As part of the application process, colleges generally require you to have “official” test scores sent to the college and “official” test scores are those that are sent by the College Board if you are sending the SAT.

The “other programs” are organizations other than the colleges which provide scholarships, athletic organizations such as the NCAA that control eligibility for playing on college sports teams, and similar.

The cost of sending official scores is currently $10.50 per college and you don’t need to do that until fall when you are applying to colleges or those “other programs.” When you applied for the test, you could have designated up to four colleges to automatically receive scores upon release and scores would have been sent to those without charge. However, unless you made that designation before scores came out, you forfeited any free sends.
