collegeboard has been confusing me with how to send my sat scores to colleges....

on their website, anything that you can view has been labeled with "This is not an official score report". does this mean that to send scores I have to use the "send scores now" button to send them? and what do they mean by I can only send 4 for free? thanks!

What they mean is that you can not print off the scores from the internet and send them- and have them be “official” any more than you can make a copy of your own transcript and make it be “official”. Why? Because SAT can not guarantee that the scores have not been tampered with if they have not been sent directly from SAT.

When you register for the SAT, for a limited time, you can sign up for 4 score reports sent to colleges for no additional charge. They will send all your scores unless you choose “score choice” so what they mean is that you can send the scores to 4 schools. After that, you have to pay for each one (about $10). So yes, you have to use the “send scores now” button. After you select the schools you wish to send scores to, you will be sent to a screen where you can enter your credit card number to pay for them.

The ACT is different from the SAT. You can still select 4 colleges to get a score from a single test session at no extra charge for a limited time and then you pay for more. The ACT charges per score, to one school. So if you take it 3 times you would have to pay for each score. However, unless the school requires this, most people choose the one best test score. If a school “superscores” the ACT and you have done better on one part in more than one test, you would want to send the test scores with the best ones of each.

In either case, you must use “send scores” to get an official report. The time limit for sending scores to 4 schools at no extra charge is up to a few days after taking the test. After this, you pay the fee to send a score report.
