Sending SAT scores.

I'm a junior in North Carolina who got a 223 on the PSAT. My January sat was delayed until this February, and I was considering using my third send to send my scores to the national merit people, because I know that 223 will qualify in NC. Is this advisable/ doable?

You should be named a Semi-Finalist for sure, but I’m not sure if they keep scores that long. I know it’s a free send, but I’d wait until you receive notification and directions. They might think it was sent to them as a mistake.

Congrats!

If you are a junior now, you can wait until fall to send your scores. I think the deadline is actually next December for you, and there is no benefit to doing it early. Just do it in the fall when they provide you with the information on how to procedure if/when you are named a semifinalist. There is plenty of time then.

I think the OP is asking for advice about using her 4 free sends. Definitely send it so you don’t have to pay for it later. It’s one less thing to worry about. They won’t lose it. Any score from 10/11 to 12/13 is valid.

I have a related question. My Daughter, who is a junior, scored 2100 (720CR-680M-700W with a subscore of 68 I believe) on the Oct 2012 SAT and we used one of the four free score reports to send it to NMSC…

Sure enough, she got a 231 on the Oct 2012 PSAT, which we know will make her a NMSF…

My question is:

She took the Jan 26th 2013 SAT to try to improve on that 2100 score. Does she need to send another score report to NMSC? I know that the 2100 is a qualifying score, just wondering if further down the road in the process (like say, deciding which finalists gets the $2500 scholarships) Would a higher SAT score than 2100 help her chances? As of now, we are using those four free reports for some reach schools (she feels very good about this sitting), but we can still change them in the next few days before they are locked in.

BTW, her grades are good (Mostly A’s, A few B’s and no C’s or lower thru 1st half of Junior year). I know that has been the topic of the month now that rejection letters are appearing in senior’s mailboxes :(

Thanks in advance, I’ve learned so much on these forums!

^ bump… anyone?

You might give the NM office a call and ask them. They are very helpful. I don’t know how much the SAT score factors into the decision about who gets awards.

OP – I agree with celesteroberts. Use the free score. My D did the same with the March SAT as a junior. Just to make sure, I did call NMSC the following year when the FInalist package was due to verify they had the SAT scores and they did.

To the OP: Yes, send the score. They will hold onto it even before NMSF’s have been determined. As celesteroberts said, you might as well use one of your “free” slots and take care of this so it is out of mind. (This is based on personal experience.)

ROCKFISHDG: You are getting no response because no one can say authoritatively how much the SAT figures into NM scholarship awards decisions. The selection process is something of a mystery. Best advice was Soonermom’s: call them and see if they say a higher score might help. (And when you find out post here so we all will know.)

If you are a Junior and taking SAT Subject tests, you could also sent All Scores to the NMS people with a free report this spring.

Are you sure you want to send the Jan SAT score to reach schools sight unseen? You might be better off using one of these four to send it to NMS and not to a non-All Scores reach school.

National Merit Scholarship Corporation does not care about subject tests. Do not waste a free report or $ sending those to NMSC.

I believe the suggestion was that if the subject test scores are sent, all previous scores could go to, thus sending a previous SAT score free to NMSC. Is that correct, can you specify to send all previous scores with your subject tests?

My D took the SAT a week before her junior PSAT and sent a free score to NMSC. They verified that they had received it.

I always thought the free reports were only for the particular test taken at that time. Would like to know if that is not true.

With Score Choice you have the option of sending whatever set of College Board scores you want, including either just the most recent or all previous.

Thanks, Descartesz!

Ok, so we got her Jan '13 SAT score today :)

CR 690 (down from 720)
M 770 (up from 680)

W 760 (up from 700)

2220 (up from 2100) (2250 superscore)

She’s done with the SAT now (YAY!), should we send this score to NMSC? I know her first score was fine for confirming her PSAT, but might this one help her compete better for a $2500 scholarship?

^^^ ROCKFISHDG: Personally, I wouldn’t bother sending the new SAT score to NMSC. The previously sent score (2100) is more than adequate to confirm the PSAT score.

I have never seen anything in writing from NMSC indicating that their $2500 scholarships gravitate to students with the highest SAT scores. Some on CC may think so, but it’s purely speculation on their part. I recall last year that there was a forum posting (by M2CK, I think) asking for NMSC $2500 scholarship winners to post their stats in an attempt to “break the code” or determine the criteria for awarding the scholarship. Seems to me that there was no conclusive evidence to support any theory out there.

The beauty of the increase in SAT scores from 2100 to 2220 is that it will put your daughter in a better position for acceptance at a top school and open her up to the possibility of many other scholarships outside of NMSC, so you should be happy about that.
