Sending scores to colleges

Can someone explain to me what the deal is with sending scores to the schools you're applying to? When you sit the SAT do you have to take a list with you of all the school codes and write them on the form so they get sent? How does that work for people who take the SATs before they decide where they want to apply?

When you sign up for the SAT a month before the test, you can choose like 4 schools to send the score to. You don't get to see the score and then send it though. It's a ridiculous business where collegeboard will charge you about $10 for each score report to each college (after the test date, those 4 free slots go away, and you can go to collegeboard.com to choose which schools to send your score report to). If you think about the millions of applicants each year who apply to 3-10 colleges for $10 for each college, it's really just cruel business.

Ooooh I understand now, thanks! So would it matter which of my schools I'm applying to that I send the scores to?

But doesn't it make little sense that you send scores directly from the SAT before you actually send the application? Do they just keep the scores on file and then update with the rest of the information when it arrives with the common app?

i have been wondering the same thing, does anyone know how that works?
