We have AP Stats, she took that last year too though (she was the only non senior in the class, so that isn’t typical for her school), but they also have Calc 3. She will take Calc 3 next year.
AB might be crucial in your school before BC. My understanding is the A part of AB is precalc. The B part of AB/BC is Calc 1. The C part of BC is Calc 2. So in her school, if they did really well in precalc, they don’t need the precalc review in AB. There is little to no review of precalc in BC. However, some schools teach them differently and kids spend little to no time at their school reviewing precalc in AB and spend almost the whole year on Calc 1 topics. Then for BC, presumably, they spend most of the time on Calc 2 topics with little review of Calc 1. In those schools, skipping part of the sequence they have could be a problem.
You would need five core academic classes: English, foreign language, history/social science, science, math. Then add classes that show your academic interests.
If you want to major in Poli sci, AP English, AP gov/AP econ and foreign language 4 or AP would be expected. If you’ve not taken physics then it’s another expected fzssw although you could take APES.
Premeds, to have the best chance, would need to have ap chem, ap bio, and AP calculus since ranking in the top 10-20% of their class wirhour those against students who had already taken those would be difficult.
AP English? The college I’m applying to gives zero credit for AP Language. In truth, I’m only a junior and I have a while to go until college so a lot can change until then.
They have you pick your intended major and meet with a professor in that major so I’m deciding which one to choose to play it best. I think PolySci is best because of my recs, classes, and internships. I also have some things going for bio as well.
I’m in my third year of a foreign language. Long story, but I don’t think there’ll be a fourth and it probably won’t fit in with my schedule because I have to take music/art in senior year, unfortunately.
They don’t give credit for it because it’s the default, assumed English class for their admitted class (except for students whose school didn’t offer it). AP English language is a typical Junior course.
Stopping at foreign language level 3 may also penalize you depending on how where you apply but in most cases you will have the minimum for your state flagship and (probably) honors college.
AP Lang is not expected or needed at all.
What colleges are you aiming for?
@moskort are either of you senior English electives dual enrollment? At the SUNY articulation I looked at, my kids’ school electives of “Academic Writing” and “College Writing” give credit for the same SUNY class that AP Lang would. AP Lit didn’t have any credit though.
You should be applying to more than one college unless you can see that your grades and finances make it 100 percent likely for admission, and it has Early Admission.
No dual enrollment.
Believe me, zero problems getting in because of my grades and ecs. The competitive part is the amount of money for scholarships, which is where things come into play and get complicated.
Ok, just curious, does your school not offer AP or dual enrollment? Or is the college you are most heavily looking at not one that considers course rigor?
AP Lang and Lit are offered, but the college I’ll end up in doesn’t give any credit for AP lang.
Is it a local “directional” public university?
Whether it will give credit or not isn’t necessarily the same as whether they consider course rigor for admissions. If you look at their common data set (CDS) you should be able to see whether they consider it or not. If they do consider it important, you may want to check with your counselor to make sure she/he will check the “most rigorous” box on their form when you apply. Your counselor may say your courseload is rigorous enough for this college, and in that case you don’t need to worry about it.
I assume you are taking some fun English electives next year to fulfill graduation requirements?
I’m in school 8-6, so not really. Just regular classes.
Are you an international student???
Did you choose your courses already? On the 25th it sounded like you had to choose on the 26th.
No, I’m not international.
Yes, I already chose, but the way things run in my school, I can change this up to orientation next fall.
Now I’m super confused. NY requires 4 years of English for high school graduation. It’s not sounding like you have an English class next year? Does your school have a nonAP/non dual enrollment English 12 class instead of electives?
And being in school 8-6 is confusing me as well, unless you are counting time spent on sports or other extra curriculars? Is this a private school?
Sorry to confuse you! I’ll be taking regular english, non-ap, at the moment next year.
Yes, it is a private school-full day of classes pretty much.
For Premed, I would suggest doing either Bio or Chem because it relates to what you want to do. But, I have not nor will be taking physics! Take whichever class is the most interesting, because in the end, it is the one you will be the most engaged in!
