My freshman and sophomore year I took english honors and then my junior year I took AP Lang
My senior schedule so far is this
AP Calc AB (BC not offered)
AP Stats
AP Bio
Physics H (AP not offered)
Theology (Required)
Government 12 (AP Euro is offered but I’m more interested in american history)
My english class is what I’m most concerned about. My choices are AP Lit, Iona Link Communications (college credit from iona), and English 12
My first choice is english 12 which is a literature class but I don’t wanna look like I’m dumbing down my classes. I don’t wanna take AP Lit because AP Bio is so much work and I don’t want to spend my whole senior year doing homework. That’s just not the person I am; I’d much rather enjoy myself. I could take Link but thats the same credit as AP Lang.
Can someone please give me advice? Would it really look that awful if I skipped AP Lit? And would the communications course look bad if I already too AP Lang?
Taking AP Lit would be the best route. Is there any reason why you against AP Lit. Your schedule is certainly doable. But if you can get 3 college credits from Iona Link Communications which are different from AP Lang, than you can do that too. If you are a STEM major, I would advise you to get as much college English credits before you go away.
@bvo112 I’m against it because of laziness honestly lol. It’s so much work for seniors. The link course is the same credit as lang but if I got a 4 or 5 on the exam I wouldn’t pay for the iona credit so it would just be to have a more challenging class on my transcripts than regular english. Do you think not taking AP would look weird?
@a20171 Your schedule looks pretty rigorous (although of course 1 more AP would make it a bit more rigorous). I wouldn’t worry about not taking AP Lit (I’d be surprised if that was the deciding factor in college admissions). You do want to enjoy senior year and not overload yourself especially if this is more AP courses than you’re used to. If you aren’t a fan of English then take English 12 or 12 honors if it’s offered. It won’t look “weird” to not take an AP in a subject you’re just not that interested in.
I think the post from @bvo112 is a bit misleading. Yes, some colleges will let you “test out” of English requirements using AP. But there are also many colleges that don’t let you do that. If you know where you want to apply you can look at what each school says. Don’t make any assumptions about APs counting for anything.
I don’t know much about English 12 at your school. Colleges will see that you took AP Lang in junior, but regular English 12 in senior. They will also know that AP Lit was available to you at your school. I don’t know your potential major so that’s that.
@Lagging I don’t know where OP is applying, But its OP decision whether or not if he wants to take English at his/her respective college.
I read somewhere that colleges will only give you credit for AP Lang OR AP Lit, but not both. If that is true, you should be fine. I would try to take English 12 H, though, so you can maintain some kind of rigor, and the drop down from AP wouldn’t be as dramatic.
@bvo112 It’s only OP’s decision whether or not he takes English at the college if the college allows him to decide. Some colleges will REQUIRE you to take an English course at their school, through them. AP Lang or AP Lit CANNOT be used in place of this requirement at some schools. OP’s personal preference to take the AP in place of the college course will not matter. It’s very misleading to imply that OP has a choice whether to take (and count) high school English courses in place of colleges ones.
Again, the requirements vary by college. Some may let you use AP credits but others will not. The key is noting that SOME will not count it (and yes, SOME will).
