I had a little dilemma about my senior coursework.

I'm currently a junior and for my science, I have to choose between physics HP and physics AP. I'm not horrible with math but math isnt necessarily my forte either. I've made it through all my past math classes with As though.

I'm aiming for the HYP schools so what is better: taking physics HP and getting an A (hopefully) or jumping past HP to physics AP and possibly getting a B?

Just for an fyi, I'll be taking AP Calc AB, AP Chem, AP Span Lit, Ap Gov, and AP English Lit next year in addition to the physics class.

If I’m not mistaken, most schools aren’t going to scrutinize your senior grades as long as you don’t get several Cs. One B is not going to hurt you.

The math isn’t necessarily the hard part of Physics… it’s connecting the concepts and knowing when to use and how to manipulate equations. You’re taking quite a rigorous courseload as it is, so if you wanted to drop Physics, it would make sense. Talk to people taking Physics and ask how they would compare it to other AP classes. It’s probably the hardest class I’m taking this year. I understand Calculus much better than I do most of Physics.

@neekzg, from what i’ve heard 1st semester senior grades count a lot; it’s mainly second semester where they don’t care unless there’s a significant dip in grades.

@mountain:
are you planning on majoring in science? because you’re already taking AP chem, and if you think AP physics is going to be too much work, why not only take one science, and spend that period doing something you like more? if you want to take 6 APs, consider dropping physics to make room for one that you’re more confident in.
however, if you are planning on doing more with science or you just really like it, i’d suggest signing up for AP since it’s usually pretty easy to drop down in the beginning of the year if you realize that it’s too much.
