How important is mid year report?
This first semester I took

AP Micro Econ
Honor Art
AP English
Honor Spanish
Internship at a major newspaper

Now I had a depression for the first semester, so I'm thinking all my grades will be Bs (1 B- and 3 B+s). However, my district doesn't differentiate B-s from B+. Is it going to be detrimental to my profile (my goal is the Ivy and HYPS)? I want to explain that I had a depression, but my counselor advised me against doing it. Now I'm at a wreck, and really don't know what to do.

Does your list include more than just Ivies and Stanford?

Do you have appropriate matches and safeties?

I do have matches and safeties. But, of course, those are my dream schools.

Glad to hear that.

In response to your question, I have given up trying to predict the whims of highly selective colleges, but I’m truly sorry to say I can’t see how the mid-year grades you’re describing are going to be at all helpful.

… That’s why I’m at a wreck right now. I want to explain to universities that I had an illness ( one time only) but colleges generally don’t view depression at positive.
I ended up not having straight Bs. At least I’m sure two of my classes are As, one is absolutely B. And the other two now are up in the air. Still waiting for final grades to come back…

Well, that’s some better news!

I think the stickiest issue for you may not be that colleges are unsympathetic to applicants who’ve suffered from depression, but rather that your bout of depression is so recent that they won’t feel sure that it’s really over. They may worry that the same unhappiness, inertia, etc., that caused you to underperform this fall may come back when you confront the stresses of a new living situation and greater academic demands. I don’t know how you can address that. If you have a therapist, that might be a good question to raise with him or her.

Ljfrom warning,

Agree with Sikorksy, but also have another suggestion–how about raising those grades if you are over the depression I assume your mid-year is not over until the end of January and that should give you time to turn those three B+'s into at least A-'s so you can report 3 As and a B on your mid-year report, which is quite respectable.

If you are not over the depression, maybe take a gap year to get healthy and then apply a new with a great essay on how you overcame this ailment.

Hi,
I went through a relationship issue this senior year. But everyone has to experience that once so I’m pretty sure I’m above it.
My semester has ended.
