My school has a block schedule so each class is a semester long, with 4 classes per semester. 8 classes total per year.

AP English
AP Euro Hist
Alg 3/Trig
Pre Calc
AP Chems
Honors Phys
Spanish 4
Newswriting

Creative Writing
Drama
Drawing and painting
Photography

The first 8 classes are the ones that I am thinking about taking to show that I can handle a difficult course load. For math, I can take either both or just Alg 3. My true passion is writing, and I enjoyed art so I would want to take those but I don't really have room. I also am very interested in drama and I think it would be beneficial for me to take it because it would help me meet a wider variety of people. (The smart nerds and the drama geeks don't really mix at my school.) Any suggestions? The only classes that I am SET on taking are:

AP English
AP Euro
AP Chems
Newswriting

I am especially confused in how far I should go with math...is pre calc really necessary?

*I forgot to say thanks for anyone that could help...so thanks! And I plan on talking with my guidance counselor about it more.

Personally, I'd go with your original list. Or swap out Spanish for any one of the items in your second list. Don't drop preCalc! (signed, Math Lover)

AP English
AP Euro
AP Chems
Newswriting
Alg 3/Trig
Spanish 4
Honors Phys

And then one or two of your other choices. Also, you could always take spanish 4 or one of those classes at a college during the summer and more electives.

What colleges are you thinking of? Make sure you consult their required/recommended course preparation. I'm assuming you are not headed into science/math at college. Even so, they may want to see 4 years lab science, 4 years math. Check that before making your decision. If you will have enough science and math for your targeted schools, then I'd pick one of your "loves", maybe based on which one has a great teacher or which one you just really want to try right now.

Again, check with the schools. At my son's school (and at many more) they wanted to see at least one unit of visual or performing arts in addition to math, English, etc. You also might want to think about senioritis and lighten up a bit your last semester of senior year. Four years of a language sets you apart as well. I'd suggest (assuming that you are NOT going to be a math, science, or engineering major:

Spanish 4
Drama (or theater production, if your school offers it - a more palatable choice for technotypes)
Alg3/Trig
Drawing or Creative writing

My current big reach school is Vanderbilt. I have already done basic art, and I will have 4 years of math if I go up to Alg 3 because the classes are long so a semester equals a year. If i got to precalc, I would ahve 5 years of math. I am definitely a writing person.
