So i'm a senior who is currently torn between two choices on where to go. The first choice is university of washington. I live next to seattle so i get in state tuition, and I dont mind being close to my parents. I want to study engineering, and I know it's a great school for that. My other choice is Howard university, a well known historically black university (I'm white). I havent visited before, but from what I've seen, it sounds like a very inclusive environment. I want to go there because it would be a really interesting experience, and unique unlike UW, which is the 'typical' college choice among my peers. However, they are not known for their engineering school. Ive spoken with engineers and they say that where you go for engineering ungergrad doesnt really matter as long as its accredited. Also, i got a full tuition and room scholarship for Howard. So should I make the stable choice and go to UW, or have an adventure and jump into the unknown and go to Howard? Any thoughts are appreciated!

Given these are on 2 different coasts, it would be well worth it to visit Howard. Don’t just go by what you read.

Whether the school is Howard or Hartwick, that you are comparing a school in your backyard, big state u with a school on the other side of the country which is small and has a specific culture that can be intense just because of that small size (big schools have more kids to spread these things among) indicates to me, that a visit, and not just for a day, is in order. We did do this with one of my sons who was considering two school that we knew absolutely nothing about, had no connection to at all, and were far away in a whole other part of the country, and were small schools with a tight group of students. So we spent a few days in both locale, and my son eliminated one from his list and ended up going to the other from that. Those weren’t his only choices either, but the other schools had more familiarity factors and/or were bigger so that much can be found within that size.

Definitely do an overnight visit at Howard before you decide.

The almost free ride at Howard is attractive. Still, I would not consider Howard unless you visit. You really need to go and see if you even feel comfortable at the school. In addition, I would guess that UW has the stronger engineering program, particularly since Howard has some documented financial problems. <a href=“In Surprise Move, President of Howard University Resigns as Budget Troubles Loom - The New York Times”>In Surprise Move, President of Howard University Resigns as Budget Troubles Loom - The New York Times;

If you choose UW, you can still go abroad or to a school in another part of the country for a year, a semester, or even a summer to get a new and different experience.

Thanks for your input guys! I think i’ll just stick with UW, it would be too much of a risk to go to a college without visiting.

Howard might offer you a visit if you are really interested.
