Senior Year AP's

I am a junior who is currently scheduling for classes. This year I only have 1 AP, which is all that my school's schedule would allow. But I want to take the AP's my senior year that I couldn't take this year. I will have five AP classes (Biology, chemistry, Art history, calculus AB and Literature) plus government and economics, and humanities. I also will have an additional five Visual art classes. Will taking such a tough course load my senior year have an impact on the admissions board?

I ask because other applicant's from my school will have taken up to 10 AP courses, and are applying to the same schools as I am? Though I have had mostly A's in an honors course load, I have only attained a 4.4 GPA, compared to some other students from my school with GPA's ranging from 4.6-5.3, originally based on the 4.0 scale, but with strange inflation due to SC's grading system.

Youll probably look more interesting with your visual arts classes.

FIVE visual arts?? What are those?? How can you fit that many in a single schedule??

My school is specifically designed to allow an arts curriculum. We offer college level course work in five different art areas. Visuals Arts, Music, Creative writing, Dance, and drama. So I guess you should also know that kids from my class have performed at carnegie hall, been in All state orchestra, won Scholastic writing awards, Ect.

I can fit it in my schedule because our schedule is speciffically designed to accomodate it. Our classes run from 8 AM to 4:30 PM, with three hours a day dedicated to arts each day, plus on some days we have Humanities from 4:30-6:00....and then open studios for our art classes from 6:30 until 8:30.

The Five arts classes isn't really going to be impressive beside my roommate who will have 10 AP classes, a 5.2 GPA and a perforance at Carnegie.

So does taking AP classes senior year help?

...when do you do your homework? Or take part in athletics? Or just do other fun things?

b@rium, please!! We're on CC!!

We have cross country practice at 6 in the mornings, I do student council, and I like reading. I don't have humanities and studio everyday either, just two or three times a week, depending on wheter it's an A or B week. ART IS FUN!!!! That's why I am here. And when I don't have class there are lots of clubs and avticities. This week I went to a Track meet, book club, volunteered two afternoons, and was still able to celebrate 4/20! It's really not bad, plus everyone says after they graduate that college is a lot easier than high school. Homework is just taken a day at a time. But about my question...Will the AP's help?!?!

"and was still able to celebrate 4/20!"

I wouldnt put that in your college application.

"Will the AP's help?!?!"

I dont think any of us are sure if the AP's will help or not because of the unique situation of your high school. Are other students taking 10 AP's PLUS the arts classes?

Yeah... I think my tentative rank is like 35th, there are around 12ish students who will have between 8-10.

4/20 isn't going on there, but two of my friends have birthdays then, silly. That's what I was celebrating.

Have your school (or you can do it yourself) explain the situation with scheduling. If there is tough competition from your school to your ideal college, you may want to apply later in the year (RD as opposed to EA) so that you can prove that you can handle the intense courseload by having strong grades. The disadvantage you face is that although your APs may look impressive, the other students will have had the opportunity to prove to the colleges that they can handle the workload and score well on the AP exams. Seeking your counselor's advice, wait until you have been able to prove yourself with your schedule for a bit to apply.

I would recommend EITHER AP Bio or AP Chem. You'll kill yourself. Really not worth it.

i agree w/ mr. carpe aeternum (lol wow, latin...)
aps look very good on your transcript and show that you're willing to accept a challenge. counselors have said that top universities prefer seeing a student who took an AP course and got an A-/B instead of a student who just took an honors/regular course and got an A. but i have to say, you don't want to overload yourself. thing is, i can't really judge you that much because i have an overwhelming schedule as well (participating in everything and cramming everything into my schedule just seems to be an addiction of mine. or maybe it's just a routine and habit i've become accustomed to lol)
are you thinking about entering visual arts? or something else? thing is, if you're not going for a science major in college, you might as well not take AP bio or chem...if u r, then taking one or the other would be beneficial. i might be taking both next year.

Thanks you guys! But will applying later really change things? It's not as though I have slacked off up until now, I would just have 4 more AP classes next year.
