Senior year + job...advice?

I just got my first job that I'm hoping/planning on keeping through next year. How difficult is it balance school/EC's/work senior year? Any advice?

Depends on the difficulty/time consumption of your classes and ECs. If you're doing say, 5 APs, two varsity sports AND you tutor elementary kids three times a week... I'd say no, haha. A job is important, but you don't want to kill yourself next year :)

It's my senior year in the fall also! '07!

Senior year was SIMPLE for me(Cooking, two periods of gym, study, English and religion...CANT beat that...) then again I'm not your average CCer. However, it's senior year enjoy it and don't get all stressed out, this is the best year as a high schooler by far. You should be able to handle everything just fine.

appreciate the advice! Yeah I definitely plan on trying as hard as I can to enjoy my senior year but I can't slip below a 3.7 if I want to stay in NHS so I can't coast as much as I'd like

itrs really not hard at all to balance all 3.
i have worked since sophomore year while maintaining a rigorous course schedule(probably one of the hardest avaliable at my school) and making good grades.
i also participated in Debate(took up most weekends and practice after school), Newspaper, NHS, Non-Western Culture Club, Youth Leadership Tulsa, Student Council, etc... while working.
its really easy as long as you are driven

Well, I got a job this year during junior year, and I had the same doubts. I was taking three APs, played major roles in three clubs (though relatively low-maintenance), volunteered, and later tutored for NHS. It wasn't terribly difficult for me to balance it because I only worked one day a week (I work at Kumon, and here, it's only open two days a week). For awhile, I worked two days a week, but I never lost focus.

If you know where your priorities lie, then you should be fine. You'll know what your limits are and what you can or cannot handle.

My parents were concerned when my physics grade slipped third quarter (probably wasn't due to work, but my parents blamed Kumon anyway), so I worked my butt off fourth quarter to make sure I could keep my job and get that A-.

I'm concerned, like you are, for next year, though, since I'll be taking more APs and have the same responsibilities while applying to colleges. It'll be very stressful, but my goal is to get stuff done during the summer.

Just survive that first semester, because second semester, your grades don't matter and your teachers know it.

Molly, what job did you get? I have the same problem with debate, and I really can't think of a job that would be that flexible with its schedule, especially with weekends.

It's easy. I took two years of the most difficult schedule I could, was involved in at least 3 groups a year, and still worked 15-25 hours a week. Really not too bad, except around midterm/finals time!

ahh...kumon....good stuff

lol you people who are like "i worked 2 days a week" crack me up. i worked sometimes 5 days a week from like 4 o clock to sometimes 9 or 10 or even 11 on the weekends and still maintained some of the highest grades in my class.

and for the person that asked, i work as a hostess at olive garden. it's really easy and since it's a restaraunt the schedules are super flexible. i just let them know that i need off like a week or two in advance and it all works out! if you can, i would say get a job in a restaraunt because they are flexible.

i definitely agree w/the restaurant flexibility thing....and yeah, I work 4-6 days per week.

It's really easy to handle a job + classes + ex. curriculars. Just don't work more than 20 hours a week and you should be fine.

LOL I worked at Kumon too. I might start again this fall at a different center because they only require you to work once/week for 3 hours/week. I just want some spending money because I know I'll be going out a lot this (senior) year.
