I’m kind of stuck in the middle between deciding on which is the best schedule for my senior year. So right now I’ve talked to my counselor and we’ve agreed upon having my schedule be Statistics, H 12thGrade English, Magnet Class, AP Gov, Korean and a Service Period.
I’ve started to re-think that schedule because I don’t know if I should change my language class of Korean to AP Human Geography. At the beginning of my high school years I said I would take at least 3 APs by the end of my 4 years, but as of now I’ve only taken one and it was AP Environmental Science.
More information is I’ve already completed my 2yr requirement of one language which was Spanish. I was also elected Class President for the incoming senior year, that is why I’ve decided to take 5 classes instead of the usual 6. I decided on taking 5 instead of 6 to give me a little time to work under the stress of not only class activities and also my school work. I really enjoy learning Korean as I’ve tried to learn on my own. Also from my knowledge of APES I really enjoy the concept of AP Human Geography.
I would really appreciate the advice and help on my situation. I just want to know which would best considering this is my last year of high school. I also want to know what would be best considering I have to apply to colleges soon. Thank you so much!
Hello,
I see that you will likely be very busy with your leadership position next year, so it’s best not to overwork yourself in every case.
You want your last year of high school to be your last dance, where you try to reasonably challenge yourself as much as possible, since one of the biggest things colleges look at is the rigor of your courseload. If you would enjoy Geography, and you don’t think it would be too stressful, by all means, go for it.
What colleges are you aiming for?
2 years of Spanish is not really competitive, so I’m guessing you’re hoping for selective but not too competitive colleges, in which case Korean or Human Geog would make no difference. I would recommend AP HG because it’s one of the few classes in HS that relate to today’s world but taking a Korean class allows you to formalize what was previously only a hobby. Both have their advantages. I’d say AP will automatically look “better” but I doubt it’ll make a huge difference.
Thank you for your advice and I understand that I need to keep my senior as enjoyable as I can. I’m going to gladly going to take your advice into consideration on my final decision. Thank you once again!
I understand that at this point in high school is when I should be preparing for what colleges want to see and what would be best for me. Thank you for you advice because I have now a better understanding of what course to choose.
How many years of language have you taken? Will you be starting Koren or continuing it. How many AP’s have you taken. It really depends on that. If you have 6 AP’s but only 1 year of foreign language, then I would definatley chose the Koren. However, if you only have 1 AP but 4 years of foreign language, its a little less clear cut and although I would lean towards AP myself.
I’ve taken 2 years of Spanish Speakers and 1 AP so far. If I take Korean I would starting it and I’m on the fence if I will be able to learn a new language this coming year.
Is Spanish Speakers a normal Spanish class or something different? Is there an option to take a 3rd year of Spanish? Sorry for all the questions!
Spanish speakers is for people who already know the language and have spoken it for years or ever since they were born. A 3rd year of Spanish for me would be AP Spanish, but I’m not leaning towards that because I don’t enjoy learning Spanish all over again since I already know it.
Hmmm I don’t quite know what would be best. Maybe someone else will chime in. Sorry!
School is about to start in a month or so and I still haven’t made up my mind over choosing my senior classes.
For now I’m having Sats, H 12th Eng, A magnet class, AP Gov, and Korean. I still don’t know if I want to change my Korean class for AP Human Geo.
I just need some help on deciding if it would be best to add AP Human Geo to my schedule instead of a language class. Mind you I’ve already completed my Language requirement for graduating. I enjoy both concepts of Korean and AP Human Geo I just don’t know what would be best for my senior year.
Thank you again for your advice!
What college are you aiming for?
AP Spanish IS the best choice, rather than Korean 1 or AP Human Geo, if you’re aiming for a selective university. If you’re aiming for a mid-tier college - a college ranked 100+ in the national LAC list, a public directional… - you’re okay with whichever you like best.
