I'm a rising senior and I'm wondering if dropping AP Computer Programming Java will look bad on my transcript. I already created my schedule a few weeks back with AP Language, AP Physics B, and AP Italian, and AP Computer, but in recent days I've been contemplating about dropping the course because I'm worried about the work load associated with AP Language and Composition.

I'm currently taking the Computer Science II, Honors (pre AP) class, and I'm just not loving it like some people are. Will it look bad that I'm not "committed" with continuing with a subject like Computer Programming? Or should I just continue with AP Java and suffer it's wrath?

You definitely shouldn’t take a class just because it looks good, especially if you really don’t find it interesting. What class are you planning to replace it with? How many classes will you have total?

And I’m taking AP Lang right now, it’s a lot of essay writing, but if you’re generally a pretty good analytical writer, you shouldn’t be too overwhelmed with it.

I’m not quite sure what class I would take if I were to drop AP Java. I’d most likely replace it with AP Statistics. If so, I’d have 6 classes in total, including the double periods we have for AP sciences. That leaves one study period for me to relax and really bring it together.

And I’m not too worried about AP Language. After a year of bullcrap Honors English class, I’m ready for some major improvements in my writing and analytical skills; quite frankly, I totally regret not taking Lang & Comp this year, but it’s better later than never, right? :D

The bottom line, in my opinion, is that I was worried that dropping a subject like Java will reveal some sort of “He’s not committed” idea to the admissions offices.

I highly doubt that by dropping one class, admission officers are suddenly going to think you aren’t committed. Have you been taking computer science or any related classes since freshman year? Is there anything on your transcript that would imply that you are highly interested in that field or dedicated to it?

Your course schedule is obviously rigorous and I’m going to assume that you do well and are a dedicated student. Don’t worry so much about a single AP class. Worry about your ECs and most importantly your essays–these are the one part of your application in which your personality can shine through and will give the admissions officer an idea of who you are. What colleges are you planning to apply to? Top 20?

Most likely Top 20 and a few Safety School around my area just in case. And thanks for the tips on ECs. I already have a bunch under my sleeves so I hope that’ll look good ;). As for the essays… I’ll have to look at them this summer won’t I?

Well, definitely keep up with your extracurriculars and definitely start thinking about essays. I’m starting my Common App stuff as soon as possible. I think the newest Common App goes live mid-summer. Don’t procrastinate! You’ll just be really stressed and frustrated if you do. Applying to some schools EA may also be a good idea.
