I want to know if I should take an EMT course next year which would fill up 2 out of the 7 hours in my schedule. This class, however, would help me see if medicine is my passion, and it’s ounds really cool and you can become a certified EMT at the end if you pass the class.
Tentative schedule:
AP calc BC
AP Chem
AP Microecon (online)
AP Gov (online)
Brit Lit
Anatomy and Physiology (Online)
Honors Physics
Independent study (engineering) (1/2 year)
Investigations in Medicine (1/2 year)
Organic Chemistry
Advanced Journalism 3 (the school newspaper)
Should I take the EMT class instead of two classes from this list? I really want to take the class, but also want to take the ones from my schedule lol. I know everyone hates this question but how will each of the schedules look on college apps. That’s is not my main goal but at this point it can help me make my descision. Thank you for the help!
Take the class and remove Anatomy & Physiology, the independent study, and organic chemistry.
(HS organic chemistry is nothing like college Sophomore organic chemistry.)
Thanks for the advice! @MYOS1634 I was taking to my GC about it and he said that since I am only 16 I may not get to do some of the different activities and aspects of the course I would usually get to do (all the seniors in my school at least will be 17/18 their senior year but I’ll only be 16) so do you think I should still do it? Thank again!
The difference is likely to stem from being of age or not, so that being 16 or 17 would likely be the same, v. being 18.
You can ask the program director directly (treat email like a formal letter).
Physics is literally a math class. Since you are in high-level math, you would probably do good in AP Physics. Consider dropping honors for AP Physics.
Ok thank you for the advice! I going to talk to the director and my GC this week! Also @dandantheman I was thinking about taking physics over the summer and and switching to AP next year. Do you think it’s a good idea to take it over the summer if my other activities don’t pan out? Thanks!
AP physics 1 goes more in depth on fewer topics. Honors physics cocers twice as many topics but in less depth.
Taking regular HS physics over the summer to get a general introduction then AP physics 1 during the year is another option.
Many people don’t even take physics before going to AP and do fine in that class. It wouldn’t hurt to take the class, but tbh you probably wouldn’t get much of an advantage over your peers by taking the summer course.
I have finished 3. I am talking to one of the French teachers about doing French 4 over the summer because the current teacher I have can’t really teach and most of my older friends and classmates who took French 4 didn’t do well because it was hard to understand the material from her. At most I’m going to do my fourth year of a Lang over the summer. Advice on the class I asked about? Thanks! Also at my school you have to take honors/ regular before AP so I’d have to take physics over the summer. Thanks everyone for the advice!!
–Take french 4 one way or another (school year, summer, online etc.) if you are aiming for top colleges.
–Do no overload – two science courses should be the max. Be sure you take a sequence of bio, chem, and physics. I would eliminate Organic, A&P (online) as possibly the two semester electives (engineering/medicine)
-If EMT appeals to you then take it if it is an option – but it looks like you have to be 18 to be certified as an EMT – be certain that you are eligible to take the class. https://www.nremt.org/rwd/public/document/emt
Yes thank you! I’m taking AP Bio and Honors Chem rn. I already took Honors Bio so I have physics left. Thank you for the advice! I was going to take organic and A&P to get some exposure to this stuff before college. Do you think that’s a waste of time? My chem teacher who teaches the class and majored in chem in college said the course at our school is a high level organic class and is kinda similar to the college one. I’ll talk to her about it. What’s your opinion? Thank you for the help!
If summer classes are part of the strategy, it’s also more than possible to complete an EMT program in the summer. A college-credit foreign language class would also be a highly productive summer option - that would kill two birds with one stone (high school and college FL credit without having to do AP). I agree that you should be able to do well in AP Physics 1 without previous physics experience. (My d did this without any difficult at all, and she’s just regular-smart, not any sort of STEM savant.) If the AP option is AP Physics C, that’s a different story since it’s calculus-based and you won’t have done calc ahead of time.
wrt #13: Yeah… not. It’s “kinda similar” in that you’ll probably cover one month of college material, less in depth, over a whole semester (or year). Organic chem is a weed out class in college. It means that kids who took Chem1 and Chem 2 AND survived (so, the top science students from freshman year) take Organic Chem. And then the class will FAIL a third to a half of them. Since it’s unlikely your teacher plans to have a grade average around 60 for the class, it’s highly unlikely to resemble anything like what you’d take sophomore year in college.
A&P is very useful for nursing and PA, not for premed. (Premeds don’t take “medical” classes. They take the regular science classes, chemistry with chemistry majors, biology with biology majors, etc, but have to rank in the top 10-20% in every single of these classes).
I’m sure Organic Chemistry is very interesting but it’s the trade off you have to make to take the special EMT certification. That being said, being EMT certified and being able to be an EMT can be very useful since you can have a medical related job in college.
Another option: Wait to take EMT until you are 17-18.
Start volunteering in a hospital as well to see if medicine is right for you.
The MOST important thing for college is the core classes: Math, science, English, social studies and foreign language.
You want to take Bio, Chem, Physics and an AP version of one of those.
I would not take any extra online classess. You have enough to do with your regular classes.
I agree that organic chemistry is not useful at this point.
So Organic is just completely useless? Also if I dropped organic then what kind of class would you recommend I fill it with? Foreign language possibly? Thanks!
