so is there ANY way to cancel my accepting admissions to a particular school?
i've already sent my enrollment deposit and housing application.
tomorrow's 5/2, the deadlines for all schools.
(this is umich btw)
and... i've been contemplating on whether or not it's worth the $40,000
to attend there, and it doesn't seem all that worth it...

is there anything i can do, at all, at this point?

Are you absolutely SURE that you have changed your mind?

If so, send an email IMMEDIATELY to notify them that you have changed your mind, then followup with a CALL to the admissions office first thing in the morning. You may lose your deposit -- but if it hasn't been processed yet, you may be o.k. It really depends on their refund policies.

Obviously you will also need to email + call the school that you plan to attend instead ASAP. If you call them tomorrow and fed ex the deposit check to them, it should be o.k. -- I'm sure that they are used to checks trickling in a day or so late, unless they require deposits to be "received by" rather than "postmarked by".

even if i sent to the college that i want to attend, that i will NOT be attending that college? (i'm not 100% sure if i sent it yet.. it might still be sitting in my kitchen, but juts in case-)

OK - check your kitchen. If you already sent in the form to the college you now want to attend, do NOT email UMich. Instead, first thing in the morning, CALL the admissions office for the college you declined, but now want to attend, and tell them you have change your mind. Ask if you can fedex the deposit to them and still go. If they say yes, THEN call UMich. If you can't get through on the phone to Michigan (tomorrow will be a very busy day), then email or fax them about your change.

As noted, you may lose your deposit, but since you said your concern was about the $40,000, you will still come out ahead financially. (I assume that the college you want to attend either offered you really great financial aid or is a less expensive school closer to home).

Michigan can't force you to attend - and they have so many students they really aren't going to have time to worry about you. You can tell them that you are declining for financial reasons and leave it at that. I am sure they have plenty of waitlisted students ready to take your place.

Just go off somewhere quiet today, by yourself, and think things through carefully to sort out what you really want. You might be just going through a day of "buyers remorse" -- it is normal to feel anxious and have a few qualms after any big decision. Whatever decision you make tomorrow will have to be the final one.

I think the bigger issue is with the college you declined and now want to attend. It's a very sad thing, but every year there are several hundred "no shows" at the University of Michigan. Call them as soon as you straigten up things with the other school -- but don't worry about it too much. All you've lost is your deposit basically.

At this time of year, there are lots of students who feel they made a mistake, or are suffering the disappointment of not being accepted to their first, second or third choice. By about September 1st, most of them are over it and enjoying their new school. The money question is probably something for you to decide with your parents. If UMich is your dream school, and they're happy to pay, then maybe you don't need to worry about it so much.
