How do you qualify for a SEOG? At 4 of the 5 schools my D received FA packages from, they listed the ACG. At the 5th, there was no ACG, but there was a $350 SEOG (no SEOG at the other schools). This is the school she is going to so I didn't know if she should also receive the ACG (which is more money).

SEOG qualification is a little more opaque than other federal grant qualification. It is a limited finds grant - the school is given $xxx and once that is awarded there is no more. But unlike the Pell grant which you get what you qualify based on a specific EFC the school decides how to award the SEOG. The basic criteria is that it is awarded to the students with the highest need. But it is up to the school. For many schools it requires a zero EFC. The maximum amount also varies by school depending on how many SEOG $$s they are given. At my daughter's school the max is $2000. It is one of the harder federal grants to get.

ACG is based on a combination of having to qualify for the Pell grant and an academic component. Last year my daughter was not awarded the ACG until right before school started. This is because the school has to verify the eligibility for the award (which is based on having completed a 'rigorous curriculum' as determined by the State she went to HS in). We asked them about the ACG and they told us it would not be awarded till later. You should drop the school an email and ask.

Thanks - I'll drop them an e-mail. I have been in contact with them so many times (getting them to repeat a non-repeating scholarship - which they did!) that what is one more e-mail!

Goo luck. If she qualifies for it at one place I would expect her to qualify everywhere else. And the nice thing is the ACG is a little higher sophomore year - $1300 max instead of $750. (it is just available those 2 years but if she is doing sciences she may qualify for the SMART the next 2 years).
