***SEPTEMBER 2015 ACT DISCUSSION THREAD***

Just need a lot of practice.

@outlooker statistically less than 25% of colleges require the ACT writing test. It is optional for most students and it is best to check with the school to see if it is needed. My source is NACAC.

I’m going to be taking it in September as well. Going to start studying the first/second week of June. I got the princeton review act book and barrons act 36 book.

Barrons is good for English and Maths only. Not good for the science section.

^I found it okay for the Science section. It’s not good for the Reading section.

Got a 31 Composite first time, but scored a 26 on reading. Hoping for a 33 composite in September. Using PrepScholar. Anybody have any experiences with that?

@outlooker I’ll take those practice tests as well

@hsalem32 no.

Can anyone suggest good material/prep books for the Reading Section? According to this thread, PR1296 and Barron’s 36 are good for English and Math. And the science on PR1296 is okay, so what do you suggest for Reading and Science?

Science and Reading - PR1296.
Writing - Barron’s 36.
Practice test for all. Nuff for all.

Is 1296 really that helpful?? I feel like it’s kinda easy comparing to the real tests.

I used Barron math&science workbook. It was SO HARD! I was only able to get through math (which prepped me for a 36), for science section I just gave up because it’s SO HARD I REPEAT. I think if you’re aiming for 36s in math and science, use that book. It’ll diminish ur self confidence but can prepare you well

Maths section is quiet easy.
Practice only for science and reading.
Science - PR1296. It has tests similar to the real one.

@ZainSD While I can solve the math, I can’t seem to do it fast enough. Last time I took the ACT I got a 31 in english & writing, but only a 25 in math since I left so many blank. What do you recommend for the math?

If possible get this book:
“Ultimate Guide to the Math ACT” by Richard F.Corn

It contains all the formulas required. Plus you will get enough practice to complete the questions quickly.
Its basically is that how fast you can interpret the question. One strategy is to skip the difficult questions and move on and come back to these skipped question if you have enough time.

If not the above book then get:
“ACT Prep Black Book” by Mike Barrett

This book along with the Red Book gives strategies on how to solve different questions with different techniques in the same given time along with explaining them.

Also Practice as many papers as you can.

@ZainSD Alright thank you. And I did try skipping the hard questions, but I didn’t have enough time to go back to them.

How many did you skip?

It was so long ago I actually forgot. Does it say it anywhere on the score report? I just remember when I was about to run out of time, I bubbled D for all the ones I skipped.

Princeton Review is most like the real test for any of you who are unsure of what to get for practice.

If you just random have to punch in an option, then do not go with just one option.

^ what do you mean?

Sorry for the wrong use of english above.
I mean is that you sticked with option ‘D’ will all those you couldn’t solve. Next time try to choose a different option for every question you are not able to solve.
