***SEPTEMBER 2015 ACT DISCUSSION THREAD***

My scores in April were: 33E, 29M, 35R, 30S, and 32C. I didn’t prep that much and the book I used was my sister’s old one (complete crap.) Barrons 36 and the Red Book are ordered and in transit, are there any other books that are really necessary? I don’t want to spend a boat load of money just on prep books, but I’d like to bump my score up to a 34 or 35 for September.

Should I take the Writing again in September. I got an 8 when I took it in June.

DOES ANYONE HAVE TIPS FOR THE READING SECTION?

@jman457 depends on the college you intend to apply but its always better to give it with writing.

I ordered the Princeton Review Cracking book, does anyone know if it actually helpful? I got a 31 in June, but I want a 33. I also have Barrons 36 and I exhuasted 1296 PR.

Does anyone know about the changes to the new September 2015 ACT? Will English, Math, and Science stay the same? Will Reading comprise of all dual passages? Does anyone have sample essays for the new essay prompt?

Would anyone recommend that I purchase Barons Math and Science Workout for the ACT 3rd edition (releasing the 14th ) to prep if these two sections will be the most problematic ? Or am I better off just saving money and practising/drilling my weaker areas incessantly with practice tests ?

Prep Scholar sends you the Peterson’s ACT review book which is pretty much just 5 real AP tests.

is another book worth it? I’m doing the prep scholar program.

Is Barron’s 36 really good?

@AsianHope only the essay is changing.

Hey guys. This is my first time taking the ACT and I’ve pretty much given up on the SAT. I’ve taken some practice tests, but I find that I barely finish on time in the reading section. Do you guys have any tips to finish it with time to spare?

How different is the writing section of the ACT this September? Are there any examples of the new writing prompts and is it scored the same as the old writing sections?

@Gyangdae This is the most recent ACT practice test, so I believe the promp on pg. 54 is how the new prompts are:
http://www.act.org/aap/pdf/Preparing-for-the-ACT.pdf

is the essay 30 minutes or 40 minutes??
i’m so confused…act.org says 40 minutes but kaplan says 30 minutes. anyone know?

@DTheMei believe act.org. They’re the the makers of the test.

I got a 31 on my first practice ACT (28E/33M/31R/33S). I hate the English section and this time around I botched the math. Any suggestions on how to practice and improve? I am taking it for the first and only time in September.

Are there any act practice books or tests that explain how to do the dual passages on the reading section?

@

This is the strategy I teach my students for the double passage:

  1. Read passage 1; answer questions related to passage one (you may have to skip around)
  2. Read passage 2; answer questions related to passage two
  3. Answer questions related to the comparison of both passages

I think double passages are easier than single passages because the test makers pick slightly easier passages. The problem is reading both passages and keeping them straight. Tackle the more difficult questions- those about both passages- last.

Prepare for this question: What would the author of passage 1 probably say about X in passage 2? That is almost always a question answer to the question.

How accurate is the Grockit ACT Score predictor? I’ve never taken the ACT before, but I’m planning on taking it in September. Are there any great online resources I can use to practice for the ACT? Thanks!

@anBoa122 I was really worried about time the first time i took the ACT reading and i barely finished. But I developed this strategy that really helped, and I went from a 31 to a 36 on reading.
don’t do the prose passage (the first one) first; this one takes by far the longest. start with science: read the questions, read the passage as quickly as possible (scanning for any factual answers to questions and filling them in as you go). Then answer the broader ones. Do the same with the humanities and arts ones. They shouldnt take long if you skim read the passage. You literally have to race through these if you want any time for the prose. Then, actually read the prose last and the questions should be pretty easy if you take time to read the passage. hope this helps!
