Serious question: Retake 2260 (670 math)?????

So I just got my scores today:

800 CR
790 writing
670 math

I'm not very good at math and I had to work to raise my math to that point, but I feel like I could get it into the 700's if I worked over the summer.

How important do you feel it would be to so for Harvard, Yale, Stanford, UC Berkeley?

Thank you

I would. This is what will happen

Admissions Officer: Now let's look at her SAT scores. 800 in CR? Marvelous! 790 in writing? Eh, it's a shame it's not 800, but we'll let it slide. But what's this? 670? In MATH?!?! ugh, God forbid!!! DENIED!

/sarcasm

Honestly, I think your scores are fairly good. Although, I would retake the SAT, just to see if I can get a higher math score. SOme colleges don't really care about writing. And it wouldn't matter what you get because colleges usually superscore. Therefore, you've already had your 800 in CR set in stone and your 790 is good. Now, all you have to aim for is 700+ in math and you're good to go.

^^^Hahahaha, I know you're joking about the math score, but deep down I feel that's how adcoms will respond to it! :(

How should I go about raising my math? I've already thoroughly exhausted the entire bluebook. Maybe I should get the online course for six more practice tests of math?

I'm thinking of getting Barrons/Grubers. Does anyone have experience with these?

I also have a friend who got a 800 in math but mid 600's in writing and reading. We will both probably take it again in October. Would it be a good idea to help each other?

Oh I second this question. Though I have a even-er score (CR 730 M 740 W 790), but I REALLY don't like my CR+M. :/

Plus I've used up PR, and all of CB.

And oh, October! That's probably when I'll retake too, if I do retake. X'D

Oh and my tidbit on whether you should retake is yes. Good idea to have your scores at least above 700. Current standing won't get you REJECTED, persay, but I'm at least OCD about scores.

Eh, I'd say a better way to demonstrate your prowess in mathematics is to do well on the subject tests. Math level 1 to make up for your "low" SAT I math, and Math Level 2 to show you can handle the "hard" stuff.

I was in the same predicament. I did very well on writing and reading but my math was below what i expected (680). So I retook it after practicing, focusing mostly on how to finish the math section more efficiently. I think I used this book, but I may be wrong Amazon.com: Math Workbook for the New SAT (Barron's Math Workbook for the Sat I)3rd Edition: Lawrence S. Leff: Books

Also, i agree with taking an SAT II math level 2. This test is even curved, so it may result in a higher score. But be warned, it IS harder than the SAT

I am in the same position as you... I got a 680 Math on January, and on March I got an 800 CR and W but a 740 Math, and I'm ALREADY weak in math (as in... I'm not in the highest level math class in school). Plus, I'm Asian, and a 740 math puts me at 88th percentile for Asians. (According to Collegeboard, even if you get an 800 M as an Asian, you're only at 97 percentile. Haha!) I really want to retake... perhaps in October. I know I could do better.

I think I would retake if I were you-- your scores are quite good overall/composite, but in general you want all your scores to be at least above 700 to be competitive for Harvard, Stanford, Yale, and Berekely. Plus, you have the time. Why not?

And hm, that's a good suggestion (to the above posters)... maybe I should take Math IIC too... but I'm not sure-- how hard is it?

to the OP, I have the exact same scores. I saw the 2260, and I was like, heh. That'd be funny if we had the same breakdown. We do!

Except:

Math:790
Writing: 800
Reading: 670

I'm retaking.

hell no you ain’t goin to no college

If you are shooting for HYS UC-B, then leaving your M score below mid 700s is doing you no favors. Getting it to 750 cannot guarantee acceptance, nor does leaving it at 670 guarantee rejection. But since HYS admit is like 7%, you cannot leave a stone unturned.
