Another safety concern...and other q's

I am consindering Fordham, but might not be able to visit until I am accepted next year because of financial reasons. The campus itself seems gorgeous from the pictures, but I was wondering if anyone could explain what the campus and surrounding area are like. Is the campus completely enclosed with security at the gates, or is it very open to the surrounding Bronx area? Is the housing all on the central campus? I noticed on the website once that students have the optioin of living in an urban area or something...I would def. not choose one of those dorms. Do people feel safe walking around the campus a lot (I am a petite 5'1" white girl from the Midwestern burbs) I love NYC and feel fordham would have great internship ops. but the Bronx isn't exactly Manhattan. Any comments are appreciated.

The Fordham forum has plenty of threads which discuss safety concern questions. The Fordham FAQ page on their website also will have answers to your questions, just search security as keyword.

From what I remember from what I read, the Rose Hill campus is completely enclosed, with security guards at the gates with id required to enter campus. Not sure about Lincoln center though. The Rosehill dorms are inside the campus. Many posters have mentioned that they feel safe when walking outside the campus during the day, but to be responsible and alert when walking when it's already dark outside.

Good luck with Fordham Got2B. nice school.

The entire Fordham campus is gated with security guards at each entrance. Also, Fordham is in one of the better areas of the Bronx (with the NY botanical gardens, Little Italy and Bronx Zoo next door). BTW: New Haven = Bronx in terms of safety

I don't want to get into this whole "safe neighborhood" debate, but let's be clear, Fordham (the neighborhood) is not one of the better areas of the Bronx, it wasn't in the 1960's & 70's when we used to take the 12 bus to shop at Alexanders and it certainly isn't now. That said, it is not the worse area in the Bronx either. Fordham's main entrance is across from the NY Botanical Garden and that area is quite nice. The Fordham Road area is what I would describe as an inner city neighborhood with lots of working class people going about doing their business. It is quite safe during the day. I would, however, not venture out alone at night, particularly late at night. It's always good to have someone with you at night in any city.

The campus, in my opinion, is very beautiful and extremely safe. There is a very active security presence on campus and the guards are on patrol 24 hours a day, driving through campus in their white Fordham Security RAV4's and they also continually patrol the parking garage. If I am in the garage, a security car will drive by every few minutes. The head of security used to work for the NYPD, has lots of connections within the NYPD, and I think he is doing a great job keeping the campus and students safe. Any student and parent should be confident in the campus security.

exactly what FordhamAlum said.

To the original poster:

I think the worse mistake you can make is going to Fordham because it's in New York City. Please, please reconsider if you're going to Fordham because it's:

1) Founded by Jesuits, who hold a specific teaching philosophy
2) Very grounded in Catholic ideals
3) Great for your certain academic goals

or because it's in New York. Clearly, you want to go to Yale; no one goes to Yale because they looooove New Haven. So why would you go to Fordham only because you looooove New York? I understand your appreciation of internship opportunities, but that shouldn't be the only reason.

thanks everyone, and monorail, I obviously don't like Fordham just b/c of NY. I am very Catholic and love the Jesuits. I want to apply to FU as a safety and really love everything about it. I just mentioned the internship ops. as an example. Sorry, I should have given more or been clearer. I know I will not go out at night alone or do anything stupid, so should I be concerned at all if I will excercise caution like one should in any city? Do students go off campus a lot at night to bars or something? Why else would somebody be out late at night? Also, how safe is it getting places like Manhattan via the Ram Van, subway, etc? Would a petite white girl be okay during the day alone or should I try to be w/ somebody else?

Yes, you should have no concerns. During the day, you can roam around alone on Fordham Road and walk to the subway without any concern; it's like any other place during the day with hard-working people. During the night, you should take the Ram Van, which is also very safe, cheap ($3 each way), and convenient (leaves from Fordham in front of the McGinley building and takes you straight to Lincoln Center). And yes, many students do go off- campus at night to go to the local bars. These students go in groups of course, usually over the weekend but there are quite a few that do this throughout the week (usually Tuesday nights since most students at Fordham do not have class on Wednesday). All in all, safety should be the least of your concerns, since you seem to be intelligent and sensible enough and probably would not do anything stupid like some Fordham students do.

And by stupid, I mean roaming on the streets of Bronx at 3 AM all alone and drunk, and yes there are a few students that do that. These students, who lack sense, make Fordham and the Bronx look bad and they cause our security ratings to go down and statistics reporting incidents to go up. But if it weren't for those type of students, Fordham could go the whole year without any incident - which is indicative of how safe the campus is.

Fordham is in a city neighborhood as are a number of colleges like NYU, Columbia, UChicago, Johns Hopkins, UPenn, many more. I would not worry about the neighborhood as the campus is enclosed, secure and as safe or safer than any I have seen. I would take the same precautions as I would in any neighborhood at certain times at night.

I took some classes this past year at our local college which is in as safe of a neighborhood as you can find in upper middle class suburbia. Yet, there was a parking lot incident one evening, and we were all warned to walk in groups to our cars as we were taking evening courses.

the city should be the least of your concerns at fordham
the campus is haunted!
