serious!

Hello, This is mengzhe from china and I ed brown. I found brown is an awesome school but compare school like dartmouth, it’s not that academically excellent, but why the acceptance rate is much lower?
Oh, alternatively, why brown is so HOT among you americans?
Since it’s not the elite IVY LEAGUE, but still there are so many people applying?
can you tell me why?

Man, why do you ed Brown if you don't even know why you want to?
Anyway, Brown's probably THE liberal & trendy Ivy

Of course I do understand and think seriously before I ED Brown. I do a lot of research about the academis aspect and reputations in different fields, like Medical school Graduate school.
but I'm very chinese thinking, anyway, I want to know your american's opinion towards brown.
thanks

Well, Mengzhe, I think in answer to your question there are a couple of parts (no flames, please!)

a) Americans are pretty obsessed with prestige. Even though Brown may have lower statistics than less well-known schools, it's Ivy League, which means it's old and prestigious and people flock to name brands.

b) No core requirements. This means that Brown is a place where both ambitious, driven, aggressive students can get an excellent students, and also a place where intelligent, but not too academic kids can have fun for four years before going into the family business (very true at my school). Brown is versatile.

Brown seems to value the individual more than other ivies. I think that is what leads people to flock to Brown.

laurenemma...you are absolutley correct.
That's why Brown has the open-curriculum. They want students to be themselves, but also branch out and try classes they normally wouldn't take at another instituions...plus, we Americans are infatuated with prestige :)

Did you already get in ED, mengzhe?

Actually, I think Brown suffers rather than benefits from being in the Ivy League. Well, maybe that's an exaggeration, but what I mean is that Brown gets a lot of flak for not being the equivalent of Harvard etc (because I refuse to use that infamous acronym! lol). When people say that Brown isn't as good as Harvard, they often forget to say that Brown is super while Harvard is fantastic. The difference in educational quality is tiny. In other words, Brown is, without a doubt, "academically excellent!"

And Brown focuses on undergrads, so you won't see it topping the US News Grad School rankings anytime soon. As far as great departments go, IR, neuroscience, history, and engineering (which is quite good despite its small size) come to mind, but there are many more.

Why did I apply to Brown? It is the perfect school for me. Simple as that.

its still a top 15 school, and an Ivy, and whose to judge quality of education except the student.

Also, the elite ivy league may not suit some people. I know I would never go to Harvard or Yale, just because I didn't feel comfortable there. I can't speak for everyone, but for me, it was mostly about feel. I was sitting in the Rock while I was visiting, in this ridiculously comfy chair, and right then I decided I was applying ED, because I could definitely see myself spending 4 years in that chair.

hahaha, so next year, when I see a girl glued to a ridiculously comfy chair in the Rock, I'll just walk up and say "Hi, Rabo, it's nice to meet you!" lol

Yup! It wasn't like a cushy chair though. It was this black wheelie type chair at a table, which is why I was so surprised. I did the BDH crossword while waiting for the class I was going to visit to start.

Was there any theme for that particular BDH crossword, or was it just a general kind of crossword?

I think it was a general crossword. Not too difficult, but I know I didn't finish it.

lol. but it was interesting and challenging enough to convince you to apply ed to brown (which makes the rest of us very happy:))

RaboKarabekian - Ha! I can just imagine that chair now. :comfy!:

I have a confession.

When I applied ED to Brown, I hadn't done any of the following:
-sat in on a class
-spoken to a current student
-been inside a building on campus (though I was ON the campus!)

And yet I regret nothing and am positive I made the best decision.

edit: omg 100th post

$hit, amor, I havent even been ON the campus. But how does one explain that there's this "feeling" you get from a place that's right for you? My only explanation is that I really did fall in love with Brown.

guys, brown is just amazing. period.

I agree. I wish I applied ED. Seriously. What a shame. :(

PS- congrats amor, lol
