Why do you like Brown?

I was going to apply to Penn ED, but they don’t use score choice. So I will apply to my second choice ED. I was wondering what you love about Brown? Whenever I ask anyone about it they just say it’s a hippie school with only decent professors and no career-oriented stuff.

I’ve never heard issues with getting careers.

No. There’s no preprofessional concentrations. Many end up becoming the best doctors, lawyers, entrepreneurs, etc. I don’t know if you visited Brown, but if you did, you would know that a lot of the stereotypes are exaggerated greatly. Sure, the locals are a little eccentric and so are some of the artsy people at RISD, but Brown isn’t a school for hippies. I chose Brown because of the students. When I visited, their intelligence level were beyond anything I’ve ever seen, while being socially normal (generalization, but pretty much true). It’s the most ‘real’ Ivy imo because they aren’t workaholics, but are still some of the most intelligent people I will meet in my life. I really like the balance the students have.

Just a thought about applying to your second choice ED. If your first choice is Penn, why not apply there either RD or ED? The schools always say they take the best of your scores if you are concerned about score choice. There are reasons people don’t do well in a particular sitting. I just would hate to be locked in to my second choice without seeing if I got into my first.

I like Brown because it is entrepreneurial. You have an idea (for a major, for your coursework, for a project, for a business, for any type of real endeavor), and resources are available to help you realize it.

The people here are a lot of fun, too, and I have had very great professors. People here are also weirdly happy, which can be nice when coursework or something else is going wrong.

Re: Brown students aren’t workaholics. I totally disagree. Lol. There is nothing wrong with working on things you love. Even if it’s a lot of work on something you love.

RISD students are cool but are really busy. It’s hard to befriend them (or really come into much contact with them) because they have soooo much work to do.

The locals are also pretty average Rhode Islanders. They have intense accents and take the bus. It’s… normal. Also relatively safe. The campus is quiet, and surrounded by beautiful homes, and within walking distance to some off-campus, off-Thayer Street activities. (Thayer Street is our few blocks of quirky stores and food joints immediately off campus.)

Further bonus: Boston is pretty nearby, if you’re into cities but not into going to college in a metropolis.

Obviously, my word is, “vote Brown!” I genuinely think it is an awesome place, where everything you would want to do is available, and the people who work here and live here want to help you do it all.
