I'm really really really bummed out right now. I'd really appreciate it if someone takes a moment to read my situation and suggest what my plan of action could be...

I'm currently a junior and i've told three counselors at my school to inform me of any summer programs. they never did (except for one that told me of this summer program which doesn't even seem good). so now it's april and i still haven't done anything because the only time i got to learn about all these summer programs was when i signed up for this forum, which i did like 2 weeks ago..

wow...i'm really sorry that this happened to u...hum...i would think there still may be some local internships at various institutions if you are interested...you could apply to a CTY type program....you could get a job lol....even though u may have think u missed out on a lot...i think there are still some roads open...sry again

I'd reccomend getting a job. Colleges love that, especially if you got it yourself. Also it's a totally enriching experience; I found that last year working at the new york public library.

thanks for all the advice. i'm more calm right now because i was able to talk to someone who understands (and would know how to deal with) my situation.

i'm really considering working at the public library. i signed up to be a senior counselor for this girl's camp. also, i plan to revive my church's youth group NOT because it will make my college apps seem more attractive but because i really want to. it will be alot of work but it's something i'd definitely put time into.

do you think that doing these activites (actually leading as opposed to learning how to lead) will be of even greater value?

I think that being a counselor, while not the prestigious thing to do, would do wonders for your leadership skills, and that's what you were aiming for right? Youth group thing sounds good too. As for the public library stint, I dunno .. that seems sort of like a generic fallback, to volunteer shelving books at your library.. and it doesn't really seem like that kind of work would benefit you that much besides giving you some extra service hours.

I also say as others did, that volunteer, search for internships and work----in one word, pursue ur passion, so try to make it related to what u wanna take as ur major in college. Don't worry abt summer programs if u can't find any, it's not the ultimate answer to a glorious, fulfilled summer!

hey its p. its me, richie. i think everyone here has a good point. your passions seem to be for leading people, so i think if you did some other activity, do one that relates to people. something that is your passion, and will help you at the same time. it doesn't need to be those generic internship things everyone does; the yg and girls camp in my opinion are a good start, and plus, if after the experience your gonna feel like you have a lot to write about in terms of personal statements. dont do the library thing; itll be a waste of time if you just do it for the hours and it doesnt align with your interests. go along that line you already started, and now that you kinda have it going outside of school, look into how you can do the same type of thing at school. clubs, performances, etc. for you personal statement its good to have a lot of activities along the same theme/line, especially if one leads you to another and another because it shows personal growth. thats all.
