Seton Hall vs Fairleigh Dickenson - Florham

Is anyone familiar with both schools? They seem to have similar stats. This would be for an average (B+) student from Virginia. Don't know much about NJ. Proximity to NY City would be the draw, but South Orange does not sound very safe. Seton Hall seems to have a better academic reputation.

** cross posted on FDU's thread

major in mind? are there other schools you are deciding amongst?

Both schools have a decent commuter population as well as a residential campus; Florham Park is definitely more of a campus with Madison a cute little town down the road…

South Orange is also a cute town, but not as suburban…

The Midtown direct train line of NJ transit has both of these on it…South Orange is closer than Madison…

FDU has EXCELLENT services for alternate learning styles…we know a number of students who have been very succesful there…

I’m the mom … her major would be film/broadcast/digital production, likely post production editing or audio. Loves DePaul in Chicago- it is first choice. Also very strongly considering Rochester Institute of Technology, Seattle University, Pacific University Oregon, and Flagler College. Looking for likelies - due to a long and convoluted story, both FDU and SHU would fall into a financial safety situation, and I’m relatively sure of her acceptance. I’m a firm believer in choosing likelies you’d really be happy attending, and we will research them as thoroughly as any other college on the list. And yes, I know the “big” names in Film, but there’s not a snowball’s chance of being admitted into them - and I think that’s just as well. We want our list of applications to include 6-7 well researched schools that she’d really be happy attending.

Seton Hall is safe… no worries there. I am sending my Son there this fall (nursing). I happen to work in the Film / TV industry. The real questions (in my opinion) that you should be asking are what are the internship opportunities and other resources available? I did two internships (25 + years ago) when I was in college. Both experiences offered me employment that I said no to. I still work with some of those staff members as they later moved to new employment opportunities. I am a big fan of NYC, though I am not a fan of NYU. Lots of TV / Film and communication industry all around. American Museum of the Moving Image, Radio and Television museum as well as a wonderful Performing Arts library in Lincoln Center.
I do not know much about FDU, other than that Madison is a very nice area of NJ. My Son and I toured the FDU Teneck campus, as that is where thier Nursing program is out of. We were very disapointed by the Teneck campus.

Good Luck.
