Hey guys,

I wouldn't post such an unrelated question if I wasn't a bit desperate. Does anyone know of a motel/hotel in the area (or pretty close) in under 100$ for 2 adults sharing a room? I keep looking but it seems like it just... doesn't exist?

Help, please please please?

My son is a freshman and his father has stayed a few times at the Econolodge and depending on the date is more in the $70 range. He says it is fine, unlike the Days Inn which smells like smoke and mold and made him feel sick. I have stayed in the “cubicle” rooms at the alumnae house (look on the Vassar website), they are nice and very inexpensive and include taxes and breakfast but tiny and I am by myself. We are not a family with money for hotel rooms but live 4 hours away and have wanted to go to Poughkeepsie for a few things over the course of the year.

When I visited with my son last summer, we also visited Bard and stayed at the Red Hook Inn. ([The Red Hook Country Inn. A Bed and Breakfast Inn located in New York City New York for unique B&B lodging.](http://www.theredhookinn.com)) While it was a little more than $100, they fed us the most wonderful breakfast and also had snacks and soft drinks for us the night before. They are also amazingly nice so that it felt like a mini vacation.
It is a bit farther than Poughkeepsie but not more than an hour’s drive through some pretty countryside. I would reccomend it and, as a matter of fact, am somewhat disappointed that I don’t get to go back since my son will not attend either Vassar or Bard.

NEValu - Thanks for the suggestion! However, it seems a bit pricey and we would definitely not have a car, so I’m really looking at options within the city.

chris’mom - Thank you, that’s really helpful! Econ Lodge sounds pretty great, for what it costs at least. We’re certainly not looking for anything special… how far ahead do you tihnk I should book a room anywhere?

It depends on the timing - if it is for move-in/orientation I suspect prices are higher and you need to book pretty far in advance. The econolodge is not in the Vassar neighborhood however - it is on Rte 9 (I think?) a few miles away. Try expedia or the like for when you are traveling. But unless you are desperate avoid the Days Inn. It is tempting because it is right next to Vassar and very cheap. Also check out Trip Advisor for reviews. THe alumnae house is very nice and right on campus but over $100 for a regular room. They do have rooms (tiny with bath in the hallway) with 2 twin beds for $85 and that does include breakfast and taxes and it is super clean and nice. Good luck.

Does anybody know about/stayed at Friendship Inn? Prices and the location look well, but it’s not possible to make online reservations I presume? Btw, I really needed the recommendations above as well, they have been very helpful, thanks.

chris’mom - Thank you so much. I’ve booked one of those cubical room… hope they won’t raise rates suddenly. Still, they obviously only mentioned the regular 160$ rooms and only told me about the other option once I asked. So… couldn’t have found it without you!

veneficuses - Nothing on Trip Advisor?

Econolodge and the Alumnae house seem like much better choices, thanks.

I have stayed at the Days Inn many times and if you stay in the main building which is completely non-smoking, it is fine and 2 blocks from campus. The smelly rooms are the remote buildings that are smoking but the others really are fine. Also, the Poughkeepsie Grand hotel has been renovated and seems fine now as well.

Priceline.com

I know I am really late posting this reply but I paid $51 per night for the Poughkeepsie Courtyard using Priceline, for a stay 4/30-5/03. Two caveats though with priceline the reservations are pre-paid on non-refundable (I ending up not going to Poughkeepsie and I lost my money), and the Courtyard is about a three-mile walk to campus. There is a city bus, but since I have never been there, I cannot comment on it.

It seems if you want the absolute cheapest stay and don;t care if you are really close to campus Priceline might be the way to go.
