Shedding some light on Waitlists

I posted a question on e-advising about waitlisting and here is the response. Hopefully this will help some of you guys:

Question:
I've been waitlisted in 3 classes -- Calculus 20A and Chem 6AH and MUS 95W. I'm in position number 2 for Calculus and 8 for Chemistry and 25 for music. I've gotten into Latin so I have at least 1 class that I'm guaranteed a spot in. I wanted to know how the waitlist concepts works and whether I'm safe in the position I'm in now. I need 12 units to have "full time" status and receive financial aid. As of now, I officially have 4 units. With Calculus and Chemistry, I'll have the required 12 units. The classes that I've been waitlisted in have ideal timings and don't result in scheduling conflicts. How long do you think I should stay waitlisted until I start looking for other options. Also, if I'm waitlisted and don't officially have 12 units, will I still receive my financial aid? Given my situation, what do you think I should do? Thanks so much in advance.

Response:
Usually we advise students that if you are within the top 5 students on the waitlist you have a good chance of getting into the class, but there is no guarantee. Specifically for Chem 6AH, the department is considering adding more sections. If they do add more seats the department will notify you via email. Also, anytime that you become enrolled in a course as in getting off of a waitlist UCSD WebReg will email you. Ok, if you are worried about not being considered a full time student and getting off of the waitlists I would suggest having a backup course just in case the waitlists do not more. Just make sure that you are taking courses to fulfill the Revelle Graduation requirements and you are fine. Do not worry too much, typically at the beginning of the quarter, waitlists will begin to move. Just wait a little bit longer and hopefully everything will work out. Good luck getting your classes, I hope that this information helps. Have a great day!

i wouldnt worry about chem 6ah. they seem to always (or at least last year) open up new sections to accommodate waitlist (hoeger is very good at this). if you are worried, you can email hoeger personally, and he can let you know if there's going to be another section. none of us had any problems last year.

Excellent.

im #5 for chem6a but then again its tina johnson... what are my chances to get in?
